1971 Alfa Romeo 2000 GTV (LHD)

Highlights

  • Unapologetically original
  • Matching numbers example
  • Great history documentation

The Appeal

Undeserving of the lack of attention received through recent years, the 2000 GTV is a prime example of why Alfa Romeo should be at the top of your list when roaming for vintage sports cars. Of course, Ferrari’s, Lamborghini’s and Maserati's may come to the forefront of your mind when thinking about what’s worthy of ownership, but the GTV makes an exceptionally strong case - nothing captures every single thing that's perfect about Italian cars like this little Alfa does. Style, handling, performance, driving position, and the interior quality all represent Alfa’s lasting heritage in masterful fashion.
This particular example is presented in unapologetically original condition throughout, wearing the patina on its paint and leather like scars gained through the ages - a representation of lives lived through the mechanical inner workings of this charming sports car. Enjoyment had, memories created, and a willingness to never give up. What a beautiful sight to see!

The History and Paperwork

  • Originally registered on the 30th of September 1971 in Switzerland and then exported
  • The original owner kept the vehicle all the way up until 2005
  • The vehicle was exported to the UK and registered on the 28th July 2005 by the current custodian
  • Original 1971 service manual is present with the vehicle, as is the operating manual, emission maintenance document and seemingly a full set of keys
  • Excellent record of service history with service logs up until 2004 before it was exported from Switzerland
  • Most recently MOT’d in 2015 with a pass, noting welded areas covered in underseal, since then the vehicle has covered barely any ground
  • Handfuls of invoices from Lombarda, a London Alfa Romeo dealership for mechanical work undertaken

The Interior

  • Original throughout and oozing with character and patina
  • Front seats are well presented with signs of age on the stitching, the drivers side appears to have no rips or tears whereas the passenger side has damage on the lower cushion
  • Rear seats are very much the same, signs of age and a large rip on the passenger and driver side headrests
  • Original three-spoke steering wheel showing its age with patinated metal, the wooden rim appears in good shape and the Alfa logo has faded over time
  • Gauges are functional and easy to read
  • Wooden dash panelling appears in good condition with some gentle patina on the metal trim surrounding it
  • Pioneer tape deck with Pioneer speakers all showing their age
  • Door cards have heavy signs of wear, a screw on the lower portion of the passenger side has either fell out or pushed through the leather
  • Alfa Romeo sill kick plates in charming condition
  • Although not used for a few years, has recently been serviced and is now back on the road
  • Headlining shows staining throughout, and some corrosion on the rear-view mirror bracket

The Exterior

  • Originally wearing a Biscuit paintwork the previous owner has resprayed in the Rosso Alfa paintwork that we see here, there's plenty of signs of age and patina throughout with some areas missing paint, and some cracks and blisters due to corrosion
  • Body panels appear to all be original, with repairs to one of the doors as to be expected of a 70’s Alfa
  • Original wheels in good condition, gentle signs of age but respectable considering their age
  • Exterior brightwork appears well kept, could use some TLC and a polish to bring it back up to par, no pitting apparent on the bumpers which is a nice sign
  • Headlamps are in good condition with only light discolouration around the rim of the inner lights, no signs of damage and they remain functional
  • Rear lights are the same, some discoloration but no concerning damage - the screw hole on the right side rear light at the top right corner has been cracked
  • Original Alfa Romeo badging all present showing fading and patina from the passing decades
  • Underside appears to be in reasonable condition, previous repairs carried out appear to have held up over the years

The Mechanics

  • 1,962cc inline-four cylinder engine, reported to be in good health, making 130 bhp when new allowing this lightweight Italian to have plenty of grunt
  • Manual transmission gearbox for complete control over this driver-focused Alfa, the gearbox is reported to be free of faults with no crunching or grinding between shifts, the only thing the vendor advises is "needs a bit of revving to change from 1st to 2nd and it's quite fun to use"
  • Rear-wheel drive configuration provides for an excellent balanced drive
  • Brakes are fully functional and are able to slow the GTV to a stop without any influence on the steering
  • The steering is excellent, and one of the 2000 GTV’s best attributes
  • Excellent service history and plenty of invoices present for mechanical work taken on over the passing years, both from its life in Switzerland as well as the UK

Summary

This example is as charming as can be, unapologetically original showcasing its patina. This Alfa has lived a joyous and loved life, and would make for an excellent restoration project for any Alfisti looking to get stuck into some proper vintage Italian goodness. You won’t get anything more rewarding for your money than this.
