1971 Alfa Romeo 1750 Berlina

Highlights

・Only 48k miles from new
・Reportedly one of only 12 in the country
・Italian styling, from a dry climate

The Background

The Alfa Romeo 1750 Berlina when released in 1968 was the biggest engine and bodied family car Alfa Produced.

The car was given a  1779 cc twin-carb engine and hydraulic clutch producing (87 kW; 116 hp) with two twin sidedraught carburettors. In November 1969 the 1750 received some minor changes, including side blinker lights at front, a wood-rimmed steering wheel, and top-hinged pedals. This model is referred to as the second series.

Its larger than its older brother the Giulia but still retains its good looks even in 4 door saloon form due to that classic Alfa trademark grill.

The History

The Alfa Berlina was assembled in the Alfa plant in Roslyn near Pretoria and thereafter spent most of its life in Johannesburg 1700m above sea level a short distance away.

Since the current owner imported it to the UK, the car has spent its time under cover in dry storage when not in use.

It is offered with an recent UK MOT even though it is exempt and it has a stack of supporting paperwork.

The Paperwork

The car comes with all of the supporting import documentation and all of the necessary DVLA registration paperwork. Registration is all complete and it has already been assigned its UK Plates.
There is a decent amount of service history with the vehicle showing the care its had in its 50 year life. Receipts for servicing etc are provided.

The Interior

The interior on this Alfa is typically 70s Italian with tan leather and wood veneer on nearly every surface. Compared to the British cars of the 70s it really is a class act and it’s no surprise these were used as top end police cars by the Italians. The steering wheel is also wooden and gives a great feel and the interior has survived the South African sun very well due to its tinted windows.

As you can see, being an Alfa all of the gauges and dials are set up for the driver and does feel quite special for a vehicle of this type.

It really is a nice place to be and in great condition indeed which certainly ties in with its low mileage.

The Exterior

The car benefitted from a respray in the standard cream colour circa 5 years ago so the exterior is in decent shape. There are a few minor bubbles in the paint but overall very clean.

The chromework is in decent shape and shows off that classic Alfa front end nicely.

The wheels are standard steels with hub caps and the tyres are in in healthy condition.

The Mechanics

Mechanically the car has done little miles in its 50 years and has a decent service history. It drives well and there are no awkward noises knocks or bangs. As mentioned, it has an extant MOT with no advisories.

The Appeal

Introduced at a time when the UK was cruising around in the Vauxhall Viva, Austin allegro and Morris Marina the Alfa 1750 Berlina was in an Italian style class of its own, no offence to the aforementioned of course.
Today, it’s still a useable 4 door family saloon which may not set the heart racing in the speed stakes but will certainly turn heads from rarity alone. Having survived the heat of South Africa and benefited from that dry climate it really is in timewarp condition.
If your after something that has a decent amount of space, ample grunt to keep up with modern traffic is that little bit quirky, this one could well be worth a look!
