The Attractions
Just like the Kübelwagen - the German answer to the Jeep Willys during World War II - the Volkswagen Type 181 used the classic Volkswagen platform with engine and rear-wheel drive to great effect off-road. One was amazed to discover how capable a lightweight car could be, with a flat underbody and with most of the weight and traction on the same axle.
Marketed as the 'Trekker', 'Thing' and 'Pescaccia' in Italy, the 181 was as popular a beach car as the Mini Moke and Fiat Jolly. This 1970 example has the distinction of having recently received major restoration work.
The soft top was replaced just a year ago and the period-correct interior presents itself very well.
With a well-documented history of scrupulous maintenance, this VW, always kept in the garage, is a truly remarkable specimen capable of standing out in any collection.
