1970 Volkswagen Karmann Ghia Coupe

Highlights

  • Stylish air-cooled 2 + 2 coupe presented in an attractive shade of dark grey
  • Subject of an older restoration
  • Low ownership with only 3 reported keepers as far as known to the current owner

The Appeal

Enjoying a production run from 1955 to 1975, the Karmann Ghia was Volkswagen’s first attempt at producing something a little more upmarket than their enormously successful but somewhat utilitarian Beetle. Built in conjunction with the Italian carrozzeria Ghia and German coachbuilders Karmann, the stunning Karmann Ghia went on to enjoy a highly successful 20 year production run.
A combination of solid and dependable Volkswagen mechanicals with  beautiful Italian styling, each Karmann Ghia body was individually hand-formed, resulting in a gorgeous seamless exterior appearance.
Offered here for auction is a 1970 example presented in the attractive specification of dark grey paintwork over a black interior. With a history of 2 former keepers and having been the subject of an older restoration, this Karmann Ghia is reported to drive well and perform nicely out on the road but is now at the stage where it would benefit from some further bodywork attention.
Undoubtedly one of the best looking Volkswagens ever built, the super stylish Karmann Ghia Coupe is the absolute epitome of the relaxed air-cooled cruiser.

The History and Paperwork

  • 2 former keepers
  • Owner’s handbook
  • Belgian registration documentation
  • Collection of Karmann Ghia magazines and catalogues
  • Karmann Ghia with Belgian exported registration

The Interior

  • Presenting in an overall smart condition, the roomy interior of this Karmann Ghia has benefited from some recent attention whilst under current ownership
  • The vendor reports that the dashboard has recently been renewed and this looks to present in a great condition, without any evidence of significant damage or cracking
  • As for instrumentation this VW is an exercise in minimalism, featuring only a fuel gauge, central speedometer and a clock, all in an attractive period style
  • Beyond the simple pull controls for lights and windscreen wipers, the dashboard also features a charming period radio, further complimenting the original feel of this VW’s interior
  • Covered in what looks to be the original black vinyl, the seats of this Karmann Ghia generally present well with the only significant area of damage noted to be over the driver’s seat backrest - as demonstrated in the attached photographs
  • Carpets present throughout in a complete and undamaged condition, including under the bonnet in the VW’s useful ‘frunk’ storage area
  • Finally, the headlining of this 2 + 2 coupe appears in an original and complete condition without any evidence of significant damage or sagging

The Exterior

  • During its previous restoration this Karmann Ghia was resprayed in its current attractive shade of dark grey which contrasts nicely against its ample exterior chrome trim
  • With its unmistakable curvaceous styling, out on the road the Karmann Ghia cuts a stunning sleek profile which is further complemented here by  a lovely set of black steel wheels with attractive central chrome hubcaps
  • Being a later 1970 model, this particular Karmann Ghia benefits from improved exterior lighting and features the larger taillight clusters incorporating reversing lights
  • Under its current ownership this car has also benefited from the fitment of new stainless steel bumpers to the front and rear, further lifting the exterior appearance of the car
  • Speaking to the vendor he reports that the exterior condition of this Karmann Ghia is generally good, however there are some areas which could benefit from some further attention, such as the areas around the doors
  • Structurally, the vendor reports that the car has had metalwork replaced in the floors and sills with the attached photographs demonstrating some evidence of this work

The Mechanics

  • Fitted with an air-cooled 1192cc flat four engine with a single Solex carburettor, generating an output of 34 BHP
  • Four speed manual transmission
  • Reported by the vendor to perform well whilst out the road, we are advised that the Karmann Ghia delivers its power smoothly, changing nicely throughout its gears and stopping well with the aid of front disc brakes
  • This Karmann Ghia additionally benefits from a replacement fuel tank and associated componentry, undertaken in August this year and detailed in the attached documentation
  • Excellent mechanical part availability making future servicing and potential upgrades straightforward and affordable

Summary

A stylish 2 + 2 cruiser, the Karmann Ghia is the perfect synthesis of Italian styling and German engineering. Presented here in a great specification and ready to be enjoyed with scope for further improvement in the future, this particular Ghia would make a great addition to any air-cooled fan’s garage.
