Highlights
- One of just 27 on UK roads according to How Many Left?
- An interesting piece of Triumph history, as their only front-wheel drive car
- Nicely presented and in good overall condition
The Appeal
To compete with BMC and their successful use of the A-Series engine in transverse form, Leyland too wanted to muscle in on the front-wheel drive market and so, the Triumph 1300 was born. A sportier TC model was later introduced which featured the Triumph Spitfire engine, still longitudinally mounted and positioned atop the gearbox.
Here we have a very presentable 1970 TC that’s in need of a new home. It looks to be quite an original example, especially on the inside. With so few of these unusual Triumphs left on the road, this charming 1300 TC is eminently worth your consideration.
The History and Paperwork
- The DVLA records six previous owners
- Last MOT tested in March 2017, although now exempt
- Original manuals and servicing booklets present
- There’s a selection of paperwork amassed by owners over the years
The Interior
- Tan vinyl; upholstery presents really well with few signs of wear
- The dashboard looks to be very smart, including the veneered insert
- All the instrumentation and switchgear appears in good order
- The woodwork on the door cappings has deteriorated somewhat in places
- Presentable oatmeal carpets
- The headlining looks clean and correctly affixed
- Practical boot space with matching carpeting
The Exterior
- Attractive Michelotti styling
- The cabin is made all the more spacious by the lack of intrusion from a gearbox of running gear
- With four doors, the 1300 TC was marketed as a sporting family car in its day
- The blue paintwork presents well overall, with some crazing, bubbling and a few small abrasions emerging in places
- There would appear to be some slight corrosion around the wheel arches and sills, although this does not appear excessive at present
- The brightwork presents well overall with a little pitting to the bumpers
- Looks very straight overall and the doors fit nicely
The Mechanics
- 1.3-litre Triumph Spitfire engine with twin SU carburettors
- Four-speed manual gearbox with synchromesh positioned under the engine
- Front-wheel drive
- Presents well under the bonnet
- We understand that it runs and drives nicely
Summary
Representing an interesting chapter in British motoring history, this rare Triumph 1300 TC deserves to be cherished and preserved for years to come.
