The Background

The Mini Moke was conceived by Mini designer Sir Alex Issigonis in the late ’50 as a front wheel drive utility vehicle.
Aimed primarily at the commercial and military markets, they were produced using a monocoque steel chassis mounted onto mini van front and rear subframes & powered by BMCs A type engine.
Approximately 15,000 were produced between 1964 and 1968 at the Longbridge factory Birmingham, with over 90% destined for overseas markets.
Production then switched to BMCs facility in Australia, where Mokes were produced right up to 1982. During this production run, one or two small improvements were made to the Moke, notably the fitment of 13” wheels over the original 10” ones, to accommodate local conditions and the emerging leisure markets.
The Mokes final production run was carried out in Portugal from 1983 to ’89 in Portugal.

The History

Unfortunately, little is known of this Mokes early history. We do know however know from factory records that it was produced at BMCs Sydney Australia factory during 1970, possibly during November of that year.
Subsequently imported into the UK, it was registered here on the 1st of April 2011 and acquired from it’s first UK registered owner by the vendor on the 20th of March 2014.
Since he bought the car, the vendor has only used it on dry days for local days out into the Peak District and of course trips down to the local pub where it has attracted lots of interest.
Currently for sale through lack of use and a desire to rekindle his interest in motorcycles.

The Paperwork

There is a current V5c registration document in the vendors name, a current Mot certificate which expires in May 2022.
There is a letter from The Mini Moke Clubs Australian Registrar, confirming its build date.
There are also a number of small receipts for service work & parts bought by the vendor over the last few years & a large one for the new rook bought in 2014.

The Interior

Sports bucket seats are fitted to the front, with what would appear to be original style seats fitted to the rear. All are in great/ as new condition and were presumably fitted and or re-furbished at time of restoration.
Most of the rest of the interior is finished in paint to match the exterior, with rubber fitted mats in the footwells both front and rear.
The painted dash is typically Mini and contains a black faced Smiths speedometer and various electrical switches.
There is of course a large floor mounted roll bar fitted behind the front seats & extending to the rear wings.

The Exterior

Fully re-painted after restoration to the body and looking splendid. As can be seen in the photos, visible nuts and bolts are stainless steel of very good quality zinc coated items, as too are pop fixings for the detachable vinyl roof, no rusty bits here.
We would suggest that the restoration has been carried out to a high standard, with new panels where required and salvageable ones restored and reused where possible, with a professional respray to boot.
Wheels we believe to be Weller steels in 13” and are fitted with very good tyres all round.
The roof is new and easily removed should the sunshine.
Overall, the appearance of this Moke is eye catching, doesn’t require any remedial work carrying out and is a testament to both the original restoration and to the way the vendor has looked after his car throughout his ownership.

The Mechanics

Probably during restoration, a 1275cc engine believed to be from a later Metro has been fitted along with accompanying ancillaries.
The radiator looks to be a new / reconditioned unit and under the bonnet has a pleasing tidy appearance, subframes & mountings have been restored / replaced and appear to be in a very sound condition.
Wiring we believe has been replaced with a new loom during restoration.
Overall, all looked and sounded good when being moved around for the photos, the engine was smooth, and the stainless exhaust plays a very pleasing tune when tickling the throttle pedal.

The Appeal

Well, you’re unlikely to see many more Mini Mokes here on UK roads as you drive about.
An eye catching swinging ‘60s icon that’s been very well restored & looked after, 4 seater, easy to maintain, cheap to run, open air motoring at it’s best and of course that upgraded 1275cc engine, there’s a lot more poke in this Moke!
An alternative British Icon is what we have here. Synonymous with the swinging ‘60s.
