  • Rebuilt engine, mechanicals and running gear
  • Bare metal respray to high standard

  • Stand-out, low mileage car

The Appeal

Wow. Such is the volume of great classics we deal with that rarely are we floored by the condition of a car we list. This is just such a car.
That it is a ‘Pagoda’ SL certainly helps. We are fans and these cars are a firm favourite with buyers. This one is also the desirable 280SL with the 165bhp M130 motor, finished in fetching metallic blue over a lovely Cognac leather interior.
Thanks to a genuinely ‘nut and bolt’ restoration the condition is genuinely impressive. The work covered a bare metal respray as well as full engine, suspension, brake and electrics rebuild. The windows, doors and seals were also replaced. The work was undertaken under the aegis of originality, carefully preserving features like the original bonnet and roof.
W113s with this specification and condition are rare finds. This is one for the discerning collector not to miss.

The History and Paperwork

  • First UK registered 23rd October 1970
  • Original UK market RHD car
  • Only three previously registered keepers from new
  • Extensive restoration undertaken in 2022 and 2023
  • Restored by seller with Mercedes-Benz technicians
  • Further fettling by The SL Shop in 2024 totaling close to £4,000
  • History file records the recent maintenance and restoration work
  • File included original 1978 tax disc
  • Reported to have been in storage for 40 years with previous keeper prior to restoration
  • We are told that the displayed mileage is genuine
  • Last MOT ran to 23rd May 2024 with no advisories
  • 71,671 miles showing on MOT test and now on 72,264 miles

The Condition

  • Comprehensive bare metal restoration refinished in original metallic blue
  • Fitted with new dark blue mohair roof and supplied with matching blue hard top
  • Paintwork and bodywork in close to showroom condition with few signs of use
  • Underside presents very well following recent restoration
  • Cognac leather interior in very good condition with excellent fittings
  • Retains its original Becker stereo modified for Bluetooth and phone connection
  • Steel wheels and tyres refurbished
  • Fitted with factory correct Michelin MKV tyres
  • Chromework refurbished including grille, bumpers and hub caps
  • Original tool kit, jack and wedge
  • Windows, doors and seals replaced during restoration
  • Retains its original but refurbished factory stamped bonnet and hard top roof
Any Pagoda is a visual delight, its mix of handsome lines, neat details and beautiful interior always offering a reward to the eyes. Particularly so when finished to the high standard of this car.
The combination of metallic blue with Cognac leather is one of the nicest choices for a W113. This car is supplied with a new blue roof - naturally in very good condition - and its original factory hardtop, similarly well kept.

The Mechanics

  • 2,778cc M130 straight six 165bhp engine
  • 4spd automatic gearbox
  • Fully rebuilt mechanicals
  • Suspension, brakes, electrics and springs also replaced
  • Few miles covered since all this work completed
  • Recent fettling by The SL Shop totalling nearly £4,000 shown in photographs
  • No reported running or driving issues
The M130-engined 280SL is really the Pagoda to have because of the surfeit of power available from its smooth and very durable straight six motor. This car leans into the W113’s relaxed, cruising demeanour with its 4spd factory automatic gearbox.
This is an opportunity to experience what a Pagoda would have been like when new because the mechanicals and running gear have been fully rebuilt. This work in 2022 and 2023 covered an engine rebuild and work to the suspension, brakes and electrics. In 2024 The SL Shop has expended £4,000 of work to bring the standard up to an even higher level.
The car was dry stored for 40 years by the previous keeper so the displayed low mileage is reported to be correct. The car is reported to be in very good mechanical running order with no reported issues.
The vendor tells us:
“This car is an excellent example, finished in show-stopping colours, ready to be enjoyed straight away.”
