1970 Ford Capri 3000 GT

Highlights

 • Just imported from the dry heat of South Africa
 • Excellent paintwork
 • Lots of spares included

The Appeal

The Mk1 Capri has a special place in car history, and the 3 litre V6 is one of the most desirable coupes of the era.

Having been built in, and spent its whole life in South Africa, the documents suggest it was in Cape Town, this has enjoyed a warm dry climate. This Capri 3000 GT is in great condition, both inside and out.

The History and Paperwork

 • Dry county import
 • Just arrived in the UK
 • Newly registered
 • MOT'd

The Capri was held in a private collection in Gauteng, South Africa for 20 years, before it was acquired in 2017 by a member of the South African Police Service in Cape Town. A mechanically gifted Capri enthusiast, he maintained the car himself throughout his ownership and dry stored the vehicle for occasional use only. The chassis and body are in excellent condition and rust free thanks to the South African climate

The Interior

 • Excellent condition seats
 • Great carpets
 • Original radio
The cabin is in very good shape, the black bill seats are particularly good with virtually no wear. It's not known if they have been retrimmed, but with relatively low miles they could be great survivors or newly recovered. The matching black carpet is also in excellent condition with very little wear or fading.

On the doors, the vinyl cards are very good, although the drivers one has been refitted with screws around the edge and is missing the black trim from the window winder.

The headlining is very good, not marked or drooping, and the dash, which has a padded dash top, is all in good order but missing a couple of switches and the radio’s knobs, although those may be in the boot with other spares.

The Exterior

 • Low miles, only 76,000
 • Rear window sunshade
Outside the car is in excellent condition, the paint looks fresh and the pale metallic blue shines in the sun. There are almost no marks in the finish, and the panels are unblemished with no dings or corrosion visible.

There are lots of cool accessories around the car, the bonnet pins, yellow tinted driving lamps over the front bumper, the hot climate rear window sun shade and the Restyle wheels, staggered with wider tyres on the rear.

All are in great condition , as are the chrome bumpers and stainless grill.

The Mechanics

 • Engine runs smoothly
 • Underbody appears solid and freshly undersealed
 • Steering rack refurbished
The V6, the halo motor of the Capri range, starts and runs well.

There are no signs of leaks from oil or coolant. Sadly no history has come over with the car, but the condition and spares included suggest it has been well cared for and has perhaps had some overhaul work in recent years.

Since arriving in the UK it has had the steering rack refurbished and passed its MOT in November 2021.

Summary

With it’s sparkling paint, period accessories and tidy interior, this 3 Litre is all you could want from a 3000GT, and with the added story and slight differences from being a South African market car, makes it just a little different and more interesting than the other classic Fords at any given show.
