The Appeal
Styled by legendary designer Giorgetto Giugiaro when he was only 19 years old as the definition of a “young man’s sports coupé”, the Alfa Romeo GT Junior became one of the most desirable cars of the late Sixties and early Seventies and is adored by collectors today as a result.
The ‘Tipo 105’ came with a 1,290cc version of the legendary Alfa Twin Cam engine, which was surprisingly eager and sounded fantastic. Early models such as this one, with their sharply scalloped bonnet, are known as the ‘Scalino’ models, meaning ‘letter box’ in reference to the slot-shaped air intake above the grille, and are among the most cherished.
It’s a model that is going through a bit of a purple patch right now in terms of its popularity, its appeal being just as strong to younger enthusiasts as it is to those who are fuelled by nostalgia. The romance of the Alfa Romeo badge, coupled to those drop-dead gorgeous lines, all count in its favour.
This one is an original UK car – a rare thing, as most of them fell by the wayside at a fairly early age due to corrosion issues. It’s offered for sale as a project, in need of some gentle recommissioning, having been parked up for nearly four years since the owner’s passing. He was a former garage owner specialising in Italian classic cars, and the Alfa is offered for sale by his family in the hope it is once again loved and enjoyed.
Whilst in very smart overall condition, the vendor wishes to point out that the car is currently a non-runner, though it was in regular use until her father’s passing and shouldn’t need any major work to return it to running order.
