Track-focused suspension and brake set-up; fully road legal
The Appeal
Enjoying a production run of over 14 years, the Alfa Romeo 105/115 models were hugely desirable sports coupés when new and are even more so today, with collectors actively seeking out the very best.
Styled by legendary designer Giorgetto Giugiaro when he was only 19 years old as the definition of a young man’s car, the original Alfa Romeo GT Junior became one of the most desirable cars of the late Sixties and early Seventies, evolving into the 1750 and 2000 GTV models from 1970 onward, with flatter frontal styling and larger, more powerful evolutions of the legendary Alfa Twin Cam engine.
This one – a Series II GTV model - is a South African import, lightly modified with a number of suspension tweaks including Classic Alfa competition springs to improve the handling and make it a harder, more focused drive, while the brakes have also been modified and a half-size roll cage fitted – should you wish to use it for competition, you may need to take it further, but as it stands it’s ideal for track days or road rallies, or to simply enjoy as it is.
It's a fabulous looking car and it sounds incredible, offered ready for use and for its next owner to enjoy. image.png3.65 MB
The History and Paperwork
Tax, MOT and ULEZ exempt
The seller has completed all of the import and duty paperwork and registered the car in the UK – it comes with evidence of Nova declaration and duties paid
Dating authentication from Alfa Romeo Owners Club
South African-built car, completed in November 1970
Race driver’s seat and three-spoke sports steering wheel
Half roll cage and new door cards
Underside rustproofed and powder-coated.
This is a stunning looking car and looks mean on its gold wheels, with lowered ride height and bumperless front and rear. The sense of purpose is enhanced by its bold Alfa Red paint scheme and racing stripes, but interested buyers should note that it isn’t perfect – there are some paint defects, most notably some sun crazing on the roof from the South African climate.
That climate has been kind to the bodywork, though, and it’s in amazingly solid condition, with the floors stripped back, powder-coated and painted grey. The car also has a GTA-M style rear number plate shroud.
The Alfa’s black seats are in excellent condition, while the rest of the cabin is in fine order, with a stylish three-spoke wheel that suits the track-focused car’s aesthetic. The driver’s seat is a bucket-style race seat, but the original is included if required (minus its runner). The window regulators have been greased with new rubbers where necessary.
The carpets and door cards are in good condition, and the headlining is in good order with minor signs of ageing. The vendor reports that the rev counter doesn’t currently work, and the heater isn’t piped, but the matrix has been tested. The cars has also had new pedal rubbers, wiper arms and seat belts. image.png3.15 MB
The Mechanics
2.0-litre Twin Cam
Five-speed manual
Classic Alfa competitions springs with adjustable dampers
Head stripped and inspected
Reconditioned gearbox
Under the bonnet you’ll find the 2.0-litre version of Alfa Romeo’s legendary twin cam engine – a lively unit with a wonderful soundtrack and a rev-hungry nature, and equipped (in this case) with a four-branch manifold. It’s a terrific engine with a well-earned reputation for being an all-time classic, presented here in its most powerful form with 130bhp, fed to the rear wheels via a five-speed manual transmission. It was originally a 1750, but has had an engine swap at some point.
The vendor reports that the car has a head-off inspection and given a clean bill of health. It also has a reconditioned gearbox, a new alternator and new engine mounts. The clutch master cylinder has been replaced, the prop shaft has been rebuilt and it has new handbrake and speedometer cables.
Suspension-wise, the car has Classic Alfa competition springs, Koni dampers, powder-coated suspension arms, new rear bushes and front wishbone bearings, plus a thicker front anti-roll bar. The brake servo has been deleted for more of a competition feel and the discs upgraded to drilled item, with new braided hoses. It has also had a new brake master cylinder and slave, plus pipes.
Further mechanical work carried out includes a reconditioned steering box and the addition of an electric fuel pump. image.png3.37 MB
