1969 Volkswagen T2 Bay Window

Highlights

  • Incredibly rare early bay window van
  • Perfect basis for a winter project
  • Ideal advertising piece

The Appeal

A sight iconic around the world, quite possibly, one of the most recognisable automobiles in history, the Volkswagen Type 2 is truly the physical form of the phrase cult classic. The simplistic design and no nonsense rear mounted air cooled engine shot the VWs into popularity in all forms, with all sorts of vans, pickups and service vehicles rolling out of the Wolfsburg factory.
What we have here today is a rather interesting example of that ever famous “do anything” aircooled legend. Hailing from 1969, WWP 886G is an incredibly early production model and now having finished its stretch as a mobile advertising piece and t-shirt sales van, this bright and bold early bay is primed and ready to be taken on by a new loving owner and lends itself excellently to a full blown camper conversion and fit out.

The History and Paperwork

  • First registered 31/03/1969
  • Previously used as a mobile advertising piece and t-shirt sales van
  • Acquired by the current owner earlier in 2022, in which time it has been covered and dry stored
  • Both tax and MOT exempt due to the vehicle’s age and historic status
  • Correct V5 registration document present with the vehicle

The Interior

  • Ideal basis for a camper van conversion
  • At present there are no seating or interior trim panels installed in the van
  • Standard black factory dash panel still present in the van
  • Original style two spoke steering wheel
  • Aftermarket throttle pedal
  • Front passenger and driver seat frame/rails are still installed
  • Lack of interior panels gives a great opportunity to highlight the solidity of the interior metal work and panelling

The Exterior

  • Brilliant two tone white and turquoise paint scheme which looks perfect on a van of this vintage
  • Paint is in good order and still exhibits a great shine
  • It is believed that the van was treated to extensive bodywork, welding repairs and then ultimately the new paint scheme prior to being used as a t-shirt sales van
  • Good quality chrome trim pieces
  • Panel gaps and shut lines appear to be of a good standard
  • Four great quality white steel wheels with adjoining chrome hubcaps

The Mechanics

  • Legendary air cooled four cylinder engine
  • Van presents in good order from a mechanical standpoint
  • The rear mounted air cooled power plant still comfortably fires into life
  • Reported to run and drive well
  • Pairs excellent vintage styling with simple, efficient driveline
  • Backed by a wealth of enthusiast knowledge and parts supply

Summary

Day by day these VW campers become more and more sought after. It is becoming all the more difficult to find good quality examples, and therefore it is a welcome sight to see this wonderful T2 come up for auction.

A perfect base for a winter project, this incredibly early bay window van has had a great deal of the hard work already done, and now wants for a loving new owner to finish it off.
