The Appeal

Ah yes, the Morris Traveller. Alongside an old Series Land Rover, these are perhaps the most bucolic British vehicles; the sort of thing you'd see parked outside a grocer's shop in an English 'chocolate box' village in a period drama. You could paint one into Constable's 'Hay Wain' and the experts probably wouldn't notice...

While the 'woody wagon' concept was nothing new, it was far less common here than in America, and the Traveller was surely one of the last in which the timber played a key structural role. It takes a skilled joiner to finish a traveller properly as no two turned out exactly alike.

Our vendor purchased this 1969 example from the reputable Charles Ware Morris Minor Centre and the Morris has been lovingly maintained since. incorporating sensible modern upgrades such as Charles Ware "Series 3" front seats, halogen headlamps, and a heated rear screen, it offers a blend of classic charm and contemporary usability which we feel stands this example head and shoulders above the majority of survivors. It's supremely usable for its age.

The vehicle has seen minimal use in recent years, averaging just 100 miles per year under the current ownership, and has been garage-stored to preserve its condition. Recent repairs to the rear sills and floor pan ensure it's ready to be enjoyed and the next owner can rest easy in the knowledge it has recently passed an MOT test.

History and Paperwork

  • UK market RHD example

  • Exempt from MOT and road tax
  • No service history from prior ownership
  • Some invoices and service book stamps present
  • Selling due to lack of use and need for garage space
  • The vendor comments: "I love it because it makes everyone smile and most people have a story about the Morris Minor from their own family history"

The Condition

  • The woodwork presents very well with a light patina but no obvious signs of rot
  • Recently re-oiled - which many prefer to varnishing on these cars as this allows the wood to flex and breath
  • Straight bodywork all-round and the doors appear to align nicely on both sides
  • New nearside front wing fitted in May 2016 (before purchase)
  • The vendor points out some more minor touch-ups to the paint, but nothing especially noteworthy
  • OEM steel wheels finished in Limestone and fitted with period-style tyres
  • Tow bar fitted - (not used by current owner)
  • Equipped with a fog lamp and reversing lamp
  • Recent repair of rear sills and floor pan
  • Charles Ware "Series 3" front seats in correct green colour, more comfortable than the original and with headrests for added safety
  • Front and rear inertia reel seatbelts fitted
  • Discreet DIN CD stereo located in the glove compartment
  • Heated rear screen added
  • Halogen headlamps fitted
  • The upholstery, carpets, controls and switchgear all present very well indeed with minimal signs of wear

The Mechanics

  • 1,098cc A Series l4
  • Four-speed manual gearbox
  • Servo-assisted brakes
  • Alternator charging and electronic ignition fitted
  • Front brake shoes replaced
  • Electric cut-out switch fitted - a sensible addition to any old vehicle
  • The vendor informs us that it is in excellent running order and drives very well for a car of this vintage
