1969 MG MGC Roadster

Highlights

  • Rare Factory Black paintwork
  • Wonderful 2.9L straight 6 engine
  • Previously restored to a very high standard
  • Previously owned by the Beckhams

The Appeal

Leading on from the MGB and released in 1967, the MGC Roadster received a glorious 2.9L straight 6 engine along with some desirable styling tweaks, in part to accommodate for the noticeably larger engine. The MGC gave for a much higher power output over its predecessor thanks to its developed Morris C-Series 6-cylinder engine.

The exterior visual indicator that distinguishes the MGC over other variants is the bonnet bulge. Not only was power upped but the MGC would also receive different brakes as well as special torsion bar suspension and dampers, all of this helps bring the added weight and power to a stop while offering supple handling on those twisty B roads.

With a production run of only 2 years, MGC Roadsters are becoming increasingly rare. Adding to the rarity, this example was previously owned by David and Brooklyn Beckham.

The Interior

  • Red leather seats and red carpet in excellent condition throughout
  • Thoughtfully restored to original specification
  • Convertible hood and tonneau cover in excellent condition
It is evident with this MGC Roadster that the restoration was carried out thoughtfully and to a very high standard. The red interior really works in harmony with the black exterior. All switch gear is present and in very good to excellent condition, all features are reported to work by the current owner. There is a tasteful Moto Lita style steering wheel, also in excellent condition which really helps add to the ambience.

The leather seats and carpets are free from any rips or tears throughout and all remain in excellent condition. This model has the desirable overdrive option also fitted. The dashboard and plastics are all in excellent condition, retaining their colour and free from any cracks or perishing. The boot is also in excellent condition with red carpet throughout as well as a full-size spare wheel, jack and tool kit, all of which are in excellent condition. There is also a battery charging terminal fitted to the rear parcel shelf.

The Exterior

  • Rare Factory Black paintwork in very good to excellent condition
  • 4 matching Falken Ziex tyres with excellent tread
  • Chrome wire spoke alloys fitted during restoration and in excellent condition
The Factory Black paintwork of this MGC gives for a wonderfully understated and classy appearance, remaining in excellent condition overall with only a few small areas of swirling visible. The badges and brightwork throughout the vehicle have been kept in immaculate condition and are free from any corrosion.

A great addition during the restoration is the chrome spoke alloys, all of which still retain a mirror like finish. There is some slight perishing noticeable on the rubber of the fuel filler cap, this is only noticeable when inspecting closely. This MGC was stripped back to bare metal during the restoration and fully re-sprayed, giving for its glorious appearance. Both the convertible top and tonneau cover are also in excellent condition and included with the vehicle.

The Mechanics

  • Newman fast road camshaft with vernier and a lightened and balanced flywheel fitted, gives for a higher BHP (exact figure unknown)
  • Gearbox and overdrive rebuilt by BK Transmissions of Overton during restoration
  • All internal box sections Waxolyed during restoration
The 2.9L straight engine in this example is truly wonderful, giving for a lovely exhaust note as well as more than adequate performance. The engine received some desirable upgrades during the restoration work which give for a noticeable increase of power. The current owner informs that the vehicle accelerates and stops as it should, well and in a straight line. We have been informed by the current owner that there are 2 very minor issues that may need addressing by the new owner if so desired.

Firstly, the last MOT advised slightly worn nearside wheel hub mountings front and rear, these were apparently not renewed during the rebuild. Secondly, there is a very slight oil weep from the engine sump due to a hairline fracture in the sump plug neck, this should be a relatively straight forward fix if so desired by the new owner. In keeping with the rest of the vehicle, the engine bay and underside are both in excellent, clean and tidy condition.

Summary

As MG's go, the MGC Roadster is a real gem. The larger displacement engine coupled with the open top format give for a thrilling driving experience. This example has been meticulously looked after since it's restoration. Furthermore, there is a claim to fame with this example, it was previously owned by David and Brooklyn Beckham.

It's clear this vehicle has been cherished by the current owner and this can be seen throughout when inspecting. Overall, this example remains in excellent condition and with less than 2000 miles on the clock, this MGC Roadster is certainly an opportunity not worth missing out on!
