The Appeal

Blending the seemingly opposite qualities of luxury, power and wide appeal is a truly difficult task. Yet it’s one that Mercedes-Benz pulled off time and again in their 60s and 70s heyday. Every model was elegantly styled, with forward-thinking technology, powerful engines and the kind of construction quality that would make Brunel wonder where he went wrong.
The W109 is a fine example of this. Stylish in the extreme – timeless even – with an opulent cabin that still offers a fine level of comfort today, and a range of torque-laden, charismatic engines, it’s widely recognised as one of the all-time great saloon cars.
This second series model is presented in truly lovely condition, appearing to be largely original and in factory specification. We adore the finish and attention to detail of these cars, and this one certainly does not disappoint.
With over £9,000 recently spent and MOT until May 2024 this beautiful car will make a wonderful daily classic or as something special to wheel out for high days and holidays. Either way, we think it’s sure to bring many more years of motoring joy to its next owner.

The History and Paperwork

  • Exported from the US to Poland in 2019
  • US Title from Kentucky, recording the mileage at 58,001 in 2019
  • EU and UK duties paid with paperwork
  • Car is freshly registered in the UK
  • MOT exempt but comes with MOT until May 2024
  • No previous British owners
  • 59,133 miles on a five-figure odometer
  • Collection of import papers and official documentation
  • V5c document
  • Plenty of paperwork for recent work carried out by Clydesdale Classic Cars
  • A full replacement ebony interior is included in the sale, which cost £1,700

The Interior

  • Smart black MB-Tex upholstery presents in excellent condition, the seats being in particularly good order
  • We noted a few minor marks to the door cards and a split to the top of the driver’s side door car
  • Black carpets and complementary floor mats show well, with no significant wear on view
  • The light-coloured, perforated vinyl headlining looks to be taut and clean, with no damage we could see
  • Attractive wood trim to the door caps, window surrounds and dashboard, all looking to be in pretty good order, with some light wear and tear entirely appropriate to the car’s age
  • All of the trim and switchgear appears to be original, with a nice level of accompanying patination – although we note the steering wheel has cracked in a couple of places
  • Electric windows all round
  • Air conditioning, which the vendor tells us has been updated
  • Period Becker Grand Prix radio, which we’re told works well, alongside the electric aerial
  • The generous boot compartment is neatly trimmed with black carpet and looks to be nice and solid – it also contains a fire extinguisher and a full-size spare wheel

The Exterior

  • Light grey paintwork shows in very fine fettle, with a nice, even finish and no major marks or blemishes we could see, just a few touched-in stone chips and minor scuffs
  • We did not some small areas of bubbling to the passenger side front wheel arch and C-pillar
  • The bodywork similarly looks straight and clean, with good panel gaps and even, consistent lines
  • Other than a few tiny spots on the driver’s side lip of the boot, we didn’t see any corrosion
  • All of the external brightwork – of which there is plenty – shows well, with some very light patina, but a nice lustre and sheen
  • The glass elements and light lenses all look to be intact and well-kept, with no obvious cracking or chipping we could identify – although the front passenger side indicator lens is a little faded
  • We’re informed by the vendor that the underside has been refurbished and detailed, and it certainly presents in excellent condition, with a number of new elements on show and no corrosion or damage we  could discern
  • The car rides on the correct 14-inch wheels, finished with colour-coded hub-caps and dressed with a set of Toyo Spectrum white-band tyres

The Mechanics

  • 2,778cc straight-six, naturally aspirated and featuring Bosch fuel injection
  • Rated from the factory at 158bhp
  • Four-speed column shift automatic transmission
  • Rear-wheel drive
  • Factory fitted air suspension
  • Lovely clean engine bay, with a warm and genuine patina
  • The vendor reports no mechanical faults or issues at all
  • Recent work done includes:
    • Complete service with new filters, oil, and spark plugs
    • New distributor cap, rotor arm, points and condenser
    • Wheel bearing adjustment
    • New steering coupler
    • Brake cleaning and new fluid
    • Repair to the horn
    • New screenwash pump
    • Repairs to the suspension
    • Complete wheel alignment

Summary

If you’re after a sophisticated classic that you could genuinely use every day but will still be the star of the show at your local car meet, this handsome W109 would be an excellent choice. Beautifully preserved with a pleasing level of gentle wear to the interior, we think this is a deeply charming machine.
