The Appeal

The British sports car industry was booming by the 1960s and it was all thanks to the thriving export market. 85 per cent of E-Types were sold new outside the UK, and most travelled across the Atlantic. In fact, the American market was so buoyant for Jaguar that several of the changes made during its fourteen-year production run were too meet evolving US Federal requirements.
That’s how the short-lived Series II came about, with redesigned lights, bumpers and several other sensible upgrades like improved cooling, making it one of, if not the most usable of all E-Types. Here we have a particularly healthy example - a California-supplied 1969 Open Two Seater. Confirmed matching numbers and colours, this is a very collectable car and we’re pleased to report it’s been properly maintained throughout the last decade. The vendor has completed several grand tours in the car around Continental Europe during which it has reportedly performed faultlessly.
For those looking for an E-Type you can hop straight into and use, we heartily recommend this Series II OTS. Located in France, it awaits its next custodian.

The Condition

  • Resprayed in its original ‘Regency Red’
  • Factory optional extra “easy clean” chrome-capped steel wheels
  • Minimal signs of wear or age to the paint and brightwork
  • The bodywork looks exceedingly straight and the doors fit very well
  • All presents nicely underneath
  • Folding hood in good order Highly original and lightly patinated interior
  • All the gauges work, including the clock, but not the radio
This E-Type strikes the perfect balance between usability and presentation. It’s undeniably smart throughout, without being too perfect to enjoy as Jaguar originally intended. The vendor demonstrates that the folding hood fits tightly when raised, lowers correctly and stows away with any issues. Inside, all looks commendably original and sports an attractive age-commensurate patina while certain high-traffic areas like the carpets have been replaced.

The Mechanics

  • 4.2-litre XK DOHC straight-six
  • Four-speed manual gearbox
  • Benefits from copious maintenance while in current ownership
As the above record illustrates, this E-Type has been well-cared for, undergoing the level of servicing these cars need and deserve. The vendor has driven it 700 kms to South West France and then used the car for a 1,200 km round trip to the South of France where they say it “didn’t miss a beat”. A recent oil change has been performed in readiness for its next adventure.
