Offered as a light restoration with most difficult obstacles already taken care of
Mostly complete with uninstalled parts coming with sale, just needs assembly and small bits
The Appeal
Updated in 1968, the Series II was the natural evolution to the extremely well-established E-Type vehicles originally introduced in 1961. While most changes seen in the Series II were introduced in part to conform to increasingly more stringent North American safety mandates, the E-Type’s original character and legendary status remained firmly intact.
According to the current owner, this particular SII is one of only 1,041 original RHD 2+2 cars, and nearly every component has been either extensively re-furbished or renewed. As is apparent from the existing state of the car, the vehicle comes as a running project, with a rebuilt 4.2L and a mostly-complete collection of the remaining parts to be installed by the next owner. All the spare items have been refurbished or deemed satisfactory for use—showing only a bit of patina—by the previous owner. This is an excellent opportunity to start your next restoration project with a solid base in this rare configuration RHD 2+2 Jag.
The History and Paperwork
First registered 16th October 1969
Previous owner began part-restoration before selling the vehicle on as a project
MoT and VED exempt vehicle
Very little paperwork survived other than some invoices for restoration parts
Vehicle’s milage cannot be verified, showing 30,76X miles but likely incorrect
Last MoT in 2008, passing with no advisories and 31,350 miles reported
Due to the nature of this vehicle, there is hardly any surviving paperwork which comes along with the sale. What does come along is an incomplete collection of some of the receipts and invoices for restoration parts and work completed. Additionally, based on the car number 1R 35561, we can also ascertain that it’s one of 1,041 original RHD SII 2+2s, as those car numbers were from 1R 35001 to 1R 36041.
The previous owner bought the vehicle with intent to complete a full restoration, but other projects have taken precedence, as they do. With most of the vehicle intact from the previous owner’s part-restoration before its sale, the current owner states the vehicle is in a near-complete condition, just begging to be reassembled and finalized with a few finishing touches. With the sale comes a collection of parts as below:
Chrome parts (including front / Rear Bumpers / Overriders / quarter glass chrome frames and many more)
Side windows and frames
All new Rubbers (complete set)
New Front Windscreen (already fitted to the car)
New rear glass
New Headlining
All Seats
Door cards
Various trim bits and door accessories
The Interior
Interior is said to be complete, partially installed but will need finalization and additional assembly
Overall, a great base for project
Black leather interior perfectly suits the Signal Red exterior colour
As a project in need of assembly, the current interior’s condition is a result of a previous owner’s restoration process, reportedly having taken place over the last 7 or 8 years. As such, a fair bit of the interior will need to be assembled, and likely deep cleaned before determining if a refurbishment may be necessary. Currently the carpets, rear seats, and dashboard is installed, which represents the majority of the interior as seen in the photos. While there are small bits and pieces such as fittings or screws missing from the interior, the majority of the car is complete and waiting to be finished as spare parts.
The black leather seats are in better condition than one would expect due to the age of the car, and would benefit from a deep clean. From what we can see, there are very little signs of wear below the layer of dust, and overall, they’re in good shape. There’s a rip in one of the front seats as pictured, but the rear are in a bit better condition. The fitted red carpets and associated sound deadening are in place and they seem to be in good new condition with no signs of wear or tear.
The dashboard is present in good condition for the age, and would also benefit from a deep clean but would certainly be usable with a bit of patina. All of the rocker buttons and gauges are in place, but the functionality of the instrumentation is unconfirmed.
The Moto-Lita steering wheel is present and in usable condition with some very light pitting present in the metalwork. The wrapped portion of the wheel is showing a couple marks, but is overall completely usable
The boot of the vehicle is in a similar condition, with a replaced fuel tank and no corrosion seen. The boot lid as well as boot interior metalwork looks to be in true and straight condition. The full-size spare wheel and tire are present and in similar condition to the other wheels.
The Exterior
Colour in highly desirable Signal Red
Paint in overall good condition; bodywork is straight
No areas of corrosion seen
Underside in incredible shape
The exterior of the Jag is a result of the previous owner’s restoration efforts; overall it is in a great state with some minor dings here and there, and some light scuffs, but still quite glossy and bright. According to the current owner, the previous owner commissioned a back to bare metal full re-spray, including the structural frames, in authentic Jaguar Signal Red colour code-258. This respray took place around 7 years ago, and while it is in great shape, it is not perfect as stated.
The trims, rubbers, and seals are for the most part not installed, however a complete brand-new set of rubbers and seals does come with the car, as well as the trim bits pictured, waiting for installation by the next owner.
Brightwork is overall in quite good shape, some bits such as the headlight surrounds and front bumper having been installed by the current owner to a high standard.
The glass of the vehicle is not currently installed, but does come in the spare parts and is in good shape. The headlight lenses are bright and clear, without any signs of fading or hazing. Taillights are in overall usable good condition, with some rough areas seen on the metal surrounds, and will need to be attached to the car.
All five of the spoked wheels are present including the spare, but there is some corrosion present around the barrels and within the spokes, see photos. These would hugely benefit from refurbishment as some pitting and marks are visible on the wheels and centre knock-offs.
The underside of the vehicle is in excellent shape, with no areas of corrosion seen, and much better than would be expected for the age; it really shows well from the restoration. Most of the bits seen from underneath look brand new and rust proofed. The underside of the bonnet is in very good shape as well, with hardly any sign of its age.
The Mechanics
4.2l Straight Six with triple SU carbs turns over and runs strong after rebuild from previous owner
Standard 4-speed transmission shifts into gear smoothly
Suspension elements all present and installed
Since its clearly a project, the mechanical condition and driveability of the car is not totally verified as it hasn’t been on the road in some time. What we can tell you is that the previous owner has commissioned a professional rebuild, and we can confirm that it does start and sounds in good order, but may need mild recommissioning from the next owner as to be expected with a project car.
The suspension moves freely and has been gone through in the past by the previous owner in their restoration. Notably, the suspension arms and springs/shocks look very good, and rubbers and bushings look to have been replaced recently.
The brakes and handbrake do indeed work to move the car around, but since the vehicle hasn’t been driven on the road they will need to be inspected for roadworthiness. All major components visually appear to be in good working order but may need mild recommissioning.
Summary
While it’s not quite ready for the concourse, as it currently sits, is a prime candidate for your next mild project. Without any known missing hard-to-find elements to track down, this E-type is mostly complete and acts as a solid base to get up and running. On top of that, the rarity of this specification alone makes it significantly desirable, especially in the UK as an original RHD vehicle.
Once completed, its worth noting that since it’s a 2+2 model, the new owner has the option of driving it with four available seats, or since the rear seats do fold down flat, the car can be transformed into a two-seater with ample luggage space behind; perfect for those classic car jogs, road trips, or even just a long weekend away.
