THE APPEAL

Introduced in 1961 at the Geneva Motor Show, where it totally stole the show, overshadowing all the other cars and making headlines in newspapers all around the world, the Jaguar E-Type is unanimously considered one of the most beautiful and important sports cars of all time.
Influenced by the D-Type, winner of three consecutive Le Mans between 1955 and 1957, and equipped with the glorious 265 HP 3.8-litre inline six-cylinder XK engine, the E-Type abandoned the classic separate chassis for a more modern monocoque and was a  show-stopper not only for its very attractive design, but also for its stellar performance for the time, with an announced maximum speed of 150 mp/h and for its affordability, being sold for around half the price of the other grand tourers with comparable performance on sale at the time.
The success was enormous and immediate, and the E-Type, offered in roadster and coupé versions, became the symbol of an era full of enthusiasm and opportunities, beloved by film and music stars and by high-performance cars' enthusiasts.
In the following years, Jaguar continued to develop the E-Type, introducing a 4.2-litre engine with more torque starting from 1964, equipping it with an all-synchromesh Jaguar designed four-speed gearbox and developing a 2+2 coupé version.
In 1967, the updated model known as the Series 1 ½, featured a new design with uncovered headlights and improved brakes.
These changes were integrated into the 1969 Series 2, whose development was influenced above all by new US safety regulations, which led to the introduction of headrests and a collapsible steering column, aesthetically updated with rear lights moved under the new wraparound bumper, larger front turn signals and an enlarged grille.
This beautiful Series 2, originally sold in the United States and now in Malta, has received a thorough restoration of the bodywork and interior, which are in impressive condition, and a careful overhaul and tune-up of the mechanics.
Equipped with a new soft top and new knock-off wire wheels, it has traveled very few miles since the restoration and is in very good working order.
Fast, pleasant to drive and seductive like few other cars, the E-Type represents a dream for all car enthusiasts and this highly fascinating and ready-to-go example represents an excellent opportunity to experience the thrill of getting behind the wheel of the queen of classic roadsters.

THE HISTORY AND PAPERWORK

  • Sold new in New York
  • Imported to Malta
  • Registered in Malta
  • Jaguar Daimler Heritage Trust certification
Originally sold in New York, this Series 2 E-Type was imported approximately five years ago to Malta, where it underwent a meticulous restoration.
The car is equipped with Maltese circulation documents and following the restoration it was kept in a private collection, covering just a few miles but being always lovingly maintained.
This E-Type is accompanied by a certificate issued by the Jaguar Daimler Heritage Trust, which lists the production date, factory colours and serial numbers.

THE INTERIOR

  • In very good general condition
  • Seats and door panels reupholstered with correct materials and colours
  • Intact and efficient dashboard
  • Original radio
  • New soft top
The comfortable and charming fully restored passenger compartment of this E-Type combines a refined design of absolute elegance with the purposeful layout of a true thoroughbred sports car.
Beautiful bucket seats reupholstered in red leather with perforated inserts and colour-coordinated door panels, center console, carpets and soft top cover create an environment of irresistible allure and are presented in like new condition.
The iconic three-spoke Motolita wood-rimmed steering wheel is enriched by the enamelled horn button with the Jaguar badge in excellent condition and frames a Smith instrumentation consisting of a speedometer with full scale at 160 miles per hour and a tachometer with a red zone at 5000 rpm, while an analog clock and auxiliary gauges for voltage, oil pressure, coolant temperature and fuel level and a long row of switches are housed in the center console, above the original radio and the shifter.
The new soft top, colour coordinated with the interior, gives an appearance of notable refinement and distinction to this car.
Everything is in very good condition, with perfectly legible and efficient gauges, surfaces free of scratches or discolouration, well-aligned panels and bright chrome-plated finishes.
Only the starter control hasn't been restored, to retain some of the original patina.
The trunk has been reupholstered with a beautiful cream-coloured fabric.
In the driving seat, sitting in an extremely low position just a few inches from the road, the sight over the very long bonnet and the complete and classic dashboard makes the pilot experience unforgettable emotions, making him feel in command of a fighter plane flying low over the asphalt rather than a car.
The symphony produced by the legendary XK twin-cam six-cylinder engine is made even more engaging in this E-Type by the three Weber double-barrel carburettors fitted in place of the original ones, which are still available and can be reinstalled.
Driving the 2 Series is made easier by the synchronized gearbox and by the generous torque, with sporty and responsive steering and controls and excellent roadholding thanks to the independent suspension.

THE EXTERIOR

  • In very good general condition
  • Flawless bodywork
  • Repainted in the original black
  • New soft top
  • Soft top cover
  • Brilliant brightwork
  • Knock-off wire wheels
  • Clean underbody
Despite having lost the characteristic headlight domes of the first series, the second series E-Type retains the original clean and streamlined lines, with a slanted windshield, a low and tapered tail and a long and rounded bonnet that evokes power and speed, which culminates in the large front opening crossed by the thin chrome bumper with the beautiful enamelled Jaguar badge.
During the extensive restoration which began approximately 5 years ago and lasted for a few years, this E-Type was completely disassembled, stripped back to bare metal and repainted in its original black, following the completion of body repairs.
Having been kept in a private collection since the end of the restoration, it has traveled very few miles but has always been scrupolously maintained.
Exterior details include a precious new red soft top with a colour-coordinated cover, the famous forward-hinged louvered bonnet, dual chrome side mirrors, triple windshield wipers, chrome bumpers with overriders and dual polished exhausts.
The brightwork is in very good condition as are the headlights, lettering, badges and windows.
The knock-off wire wheels are new and larger than the originals, allowing them to accommodate wider tyres for better road holding and aesthetics.

THE MECHANICS

  • 4.2 liter inline six-cylinder DOHC XK engine with 246 hp
  • Four-speed gearbox
  • Three double-barrel Weber carburettors
  • Overhauled mechanics
  • New head gasket
Opening the long bonnet, which also includes the fenders, is an unforgettable experience in itself. The entire front part of the car flips forward, giving unlimited access to the mechanics and chassis, allowing to admire the famous XK twin-cam engine, here in the 4.2-litre version with around 250 hp.
On this roadster, the two original carburettors have been replaced by three double-barrel Webers, which give it the menacing sound of a real racing car. The original carburetors will be delivered to the buyer and can be reinstalled.
The engine was completely overhauled and the head gasket was replaced in 2023.
All mechanics of the car have been carefully maintained and the seller guarantees that each component is efficient and in excellent working order.
New larger sports tyres cover the new knock-off wire wheels, which come with a nice tool kit.

SUMMARY

E-Types are among the most desired classic cars of all times, iconic and admired throughout the world.
The first and second series models are slightly faster than the third series ones and show cleaner, more streamlined lines.
The E-Types of the second series also benefit from numerous improvements compared to previous ones, with a fully synchronized gearbox, double electric fans to improve cooling, headrests and a collapsible steering column which increases safety and are generally considered the highest evolution of the original design.
From an aesthetic point of view, the larger front air intake and the higher wraparound bumpers make them even more aggressive and alluring.
This particular example with a bodywork in excellent condition and high quality interiors, combined with carefully tuned mechanics and pleasant and discreet modifications, represents a truly appealing opportunity to get behind the wheel of one of the most beautiful and important cars ever built and enjoy its charm and performance with great ease.
