The Appeal
To choose the name of its brand-new 105/115 Series Spider, Alfa Romeo let the Italian people decide via a write-in competition. Today, such a poll would likely lead to it being called something like "Car-yMcCarface" but fortunately, the people of '60s Italy took it seriously. Snr Trionfi of Brescia won with "Duetto" meaning "duet" - which was most apt for a two-seater car with two overhead camshafts. Trademark issues meant that the name remained unofficial, but to this day, the Duetto name has stuck.
Early Spiders remain exceedingly desirable, and it isn't difficult to see why. It's a strong contender for the most beautiful car of all time, and from behind the wheel, it's equally impressive to drive thanks to that fabulous all-alloy Nord twin-cam.
This 1969 example is right-hand drive - a real rarity. The vendor informs us that its original 1,750 cc engine has been substituted for a later 2,000 cc unit which was fitted to later Spiders and other 105 Series Alfas. This provides an upgrade in power and torque, while a 123 electronic ignition system ensures reliable performance. A major service has been completed in readiness for sale, while the car has also been voluntarily submitted for MOT testing where it passed with flying colours.
Mechanicals aside, this Duetto is in lovely condition, classically finished in Rosso and complete with a well-fitting hood. A current UK V5C is present, as is DVLA correspondence regarding registering the car and invoices relating to the June 2024 servicing work.
If you're after an early Alfa Romeo Spider that's ready to enjoy, this is a most worthy candidate.
