Following on from VW’s first incarnation of a commercial vehicle, the Bay Window Bus was introduced in late 1967. Quite different to its predecessor, many felt that it had lost some of the character of the previous model. However, many refinements were added and its top speed was increased to 80 mph.

This second-generation Type 2 lost its distinctive split front windshield, and was designed to be easier to produce using the advances in mechanised production, and was slightly larger and considerably heavier than its predecessor. Commonly known as the Bay-window, or Bread Loaf in other countries.

The 36bhp engine was also slightly larger, having grown to 1600cc, but was a still a single port design at this time. The new bus had done away with the swing axle rear suspension of the Split and Beetle and reduction boxes previously used to raise ride height, and act as an extra gearbox. Instead, half-shaft axles fitted with constant velocity joints raised ride height without the wild changes in camber of the Beetle-based swing axle suspension. The updated Bus transaxle is usually sought after by off-road racers using air-cooled Volkswagen components, as well as being commonly used by Split bus owners when converting their bus to “straight-axles”.

The Bay was modernised by various small changes over a three year period, all eventually leading to the fitment of the later type 4 engine.

In 1971 VW introduced a new engine, whilst still a 1600cc now featured dual intake ports on each cylinder head, power was increased to 50bhp, this upgrade coincided with the addition of new road wheels, behind which were disc brakes for the first time on a Type 2.

We’re told that the camper comes with a folder, which contains documents and photos of the respray, past mots and a mountain of past receipts and invoices etc to document parts used.

Going by the pictures, this camper has been completely redone inside. Continuing the black and red theme on the inside to match the fresh paint on the outside. The car looks fantastic and the red and black contrast certainly makes it look like an inviting place to sit. Everything looks to have been finished to a very high quality in the cabin. You open the side door and reveal a light oak floor with an Interior day van table and stool and black and red leather seats, which are fitted with modern inertia seatbelts with a centre lap belt for safety. The seats also recline to a rock and roll bed and there are solid window blinds to block out the sunlight.

One of the first things you’ll notice on the images is how “fresh” the paint work looks on the pictures. This is because the camper has apparently had a recent respray, which, on the photographs looks absolutely stunning. The camper sits on 5x15”SSP BRM black and polished alloy wheels which really suits the style of the campervan. It has also apparently been lowered and has a ragtop roof, as well as a Stainless-steel sports exhaust to show off the rear. There are apparently no rust spot on the vehicle at all, just some small amount of bubbling around one of the windows so we are told.

As well as the exterior, we are told that the engine has also had attention paid to it. Here is a list of some of the things that the owner has told us that have been done.

Whether you are a car enthusiast or not, these campervans always attract attention, regardless of condition. wherever they go. Combine that with, what looks like a very clean and tidy example, I’m sure, will attract even more attention and be the envy of many people on the road. These campers are associated with freedom and the open road, or camping with friends or family. This ones seems to have everything going for it and has been made to look like a modern, useable classic camper. We especially like the 2 tone red and black combination, which is carried out throughout the interior and sleeping quarters. The photographs are great, especially the one where its parked next to the sea, which feels like its natural habitat…. It just makes us want to go away to a seaside resort, on a lovely sunny day, in a campervan…. Maybe a red and black one?!
