The Appeal
Volvo wasn’t really known for stylish sports cars, so the P1800 caused quite the stir in its day. Combining the firm’s legendary reliability, quality and safety with sporty Italianate design proved to be a winning combination. UK sales were strong thanks to Roger Moore’s on-screen antics as ‘The Saint’, driving a shiny new Volvo P1800 rather than the usual Jags and Aston Martins driven by the nation’s favourite fictional secret agents, vigilantes and loveable rogues of the period.
This right-hand-drive 1968 P1800S looks to be in fantastic order for its age, having undergone extensive restoration around ten years ago. Since 2018, it has formed part of the vendor’s car collection, dry-stored in a heated facility and exercised regularly on dry days. The Volvo has also taken the vendor on several European road trips, on which it reportedly never missed a beat. And we shouldn’t be surprised since it was a P1800 in which American Irv Gordon covered 3.25 million miles in!
