The Appeal
Porsche’s original Targa was a suitably ingenious solution to anticipated changes in US legislation that risked outlawing open top cars. Debuted on the 911 in 1966 and extended to the 912 from 1967, the first Targas had removable roof panels and a folding rear soft top.
Just 2,500 912s were built with this arrangement and they are exceptionally rare finds today. Here we have one, and it is a treat for enthusiasts. The seller commissioned an extensive restoration by Porsche specialist Turmgarage of Kleve, Germany in 2018. The work was completed in 2019 and neatly blends original features with refurbished and restored items.
The work by Turmgarage included an engine and gearbox rebuild plus overhaul of the brakes, suspension and shock absorbers. The body was restored and repainted in the original colour. To preserve originality, the interior was lightly refreshed rather than replaced.
Thanks to sparing use, this rare car is in very good cosmetic and mechanical order. It is a matching numbers car, including the optional 5spd manual gearbox. The vendor tells us that it can be sold with a new German technical inspection if required.

This car was extensively restored by Turmgarage between 2018 and 2019. It has been with the current keeper ever since and he has clearly looked after it well. We struggled to find any indications of use since the work was completed.
The approach was to prioritise originality. So the car retains its fetching original dark red paintwork and many of the original fittings. These are in good order with a light patina to some components that arguably adds a nice level of extra character. The clever Targa roof with its folding rear window is in very good condition and fully working.
Inside, the interior was refreshed by Turmgarage but not fully restored. Like the outside, that means a level of character and light signs of use that suit a car of this age. Everything works except the clock and fuel gauge.
The Mechanics
- 1,582cc flat-four engine
- Fitted with optional factory 5spd gearbox
- Very tidy engine bay as shown
- Original engine and transmission completely rebuilt
- Overhauled brakes, shock absorbers, and suspension components
- No reported running or driving issues
- Car can be sent for German technical inspection of buyer requires
Afficionado’s known that the 912’s sweet-revvng 1.6L flat four is a gem of a powerplant. Lighter than the flax-six of the 911, it enables agile, nimble handling. Here, it is mated to the optional factory 5spd gearbox that delivers more relaxed high-speed cruising.
The engine and gearbox are the original units but have been fully rebuilt by Turmgarage with few miles covered since. The brakes, suspension and shock absorbers have also been renewed.
The seller tells us that the car runs and drives very well with no known issues.
