  • Repainted in stunning Amethyst Pearl

  • Car with matching numbers

The most

Only one number is different, but the 912 is the Porsche that is talked about far less. That's good news for buyers, because the 4-cylinder '911' is a brilliant car and undoubtedly truer to the original spirit of Ferdinand Porsche.

The lighter engine perfectly suits the dynamics of the early cars and offers a Porsche that some claim handles better than a 911. You can decide if you choose to bid on this 1968 example.

It's beautifully finished in Amethyst with a Pearlescent finish, the paintwork accented by neat details such as yellow Le Mans-style headlights and iconic black Fuchs wheels.

The car arrived in France from the USA in 2017, and we're told that the low mileage shown of less than 57,000 miles is genuine and that it's a matching numbers car. Since its arrival, it has undergone extensive mechanical servicing, including a new clutch, carburettor overhaul, brake work, new dampers, as well as replacement of the head gasket, spark plugs and coil.

The result is a healthy car ready to be enjoyed. The long Technical Inspection until February 2027 confirms this point.

Condition

  • Bodywork presents well with straight panels and good panel fit
  • Underbody in good condition and the car is offered with a recent technical inspection
  • Black Fuchs style alloy wheels with polished edges in good condition
  • Yellow headlights which appear bright and work correctly
  • Exterior chrome which appears original and in good overall condition
  • Black vinyl interior, unmodified and well preserved, with no visible wear
  • Well maintained dashboard and controls with clear dials and well maintained aluminium effect trim
  • Factory-style four-spoke steering wheel with wooden rim in good condition
  • We understand that the electrical systems and controls are in good working order
The decision to change from Sand Beige to Amethyst was an inspired one, resulting in a very attractive car. The paintwork remains in good condition, as does the bodywork. A few neat details, such as the yellow headlights and distinctive Fuchs alloys, add to the appeal.

The interior is virtually standard '912' with black vinyl seats and a factory-style four-spoke steering wheel with wooden rim. It is very well preserved, typical of the car's low mileage over the years.

The mechanics

  • 1,600 cc flat-four engine
  • 5-speed manual gearbox
  • The salesman tells us that the car starts and runs well
  • We are told that the brakes work correctly and efficiently
  • The seller indicates that the ignition would benefit from an adjustment
  • We are told that the car has matching numbers
  • The mileage shown is genuine according to the vendor
  • Lots of work carried out since 2017 summarised below
Work since 2017:
  • Engine and gearbox flushed several times
  • Replacement of the exhaust system
  • Carburettor kit
  • Complete ignition changed, including cylinder head, spark plug, coil, etc.
  • Upgrade to 16-inch wheels with FUCHS rims
  • Clutch kit
  • Gearbox linkage, including ring, guide, etc.
  • Shock absorbers
  • Brake discs and pads
Anyone who reduces the 912 to a less powerful 911 is completely missing the point. Yes, there's less top-end power. But the 912 is all about what you do with it.

The 1,600 flat-four engine - sourced from the 356 - is both lively and willing, an eager unit that thrives when pushed. That it's light also helps this car's balance. The two combine to deliver a driving experience quite different from a 911 - and, for many, much better.

This car has covered just 57,000 miles (92,000 km) in its life and would be a matching numbers example. There's a long list of recent work since it arrived in France in 2017, covering brakes, suspension, clutch, ignition and gearbox.

The car is said to be roadworthy and ready to be enjoyed by its new owner. The current technical inspection is valid until February 2027.
