The Appeal
MG’s mid-size, long-lived roadster is great but, as innumerable owners and restorers have proved, it is much better when it has more power. If you want exactly that plus a car that is factory-standard then you want a MGC.
These rare cars were built to fill the gap in the market vacated by the Austin Healey 3000. The two cars share a similar engine and a long-legged, long-distance cruisability that makes them perfect as touring cars.
Enthusiasts are increasingly discovering these cars, which likely explains why this car received its extensive restoration in 2010. The work, undertaken by a well regarded race engineer, covered the mechanicals, running, interior trim, bodywork and paintwork.
Now finished in the beautiful combination of Masons Black with Magnolia leather cabin, it is a very, very good example. Just look at the shut lines, paint lustre and chrome finish to get a sense of the quality.
The current enthusiast keeper has fastidiously maintained this pretty car, including keeping the vanishingly low mileage below 30,000 miles. The result is a car that feels like a potential show award winner. This is a superb example of one of British motoring’s best classic sports cars.
The vendor writes:
“I’ve owned the car since 2010, It was fully restored by an acknowledged race engineer for which I have full documentation. There is a full history for this car including a CD on the rebuild. Garage stored from purchase
“The car is great to drive - it is lots of fun. XWR 714G is an exceptional example of the marque having been restored to exacting standards. The car has been rustproofed and seam sealed with £15,000 spent on parts alone. There is also an original hard top.”

This is a genuinely impressive MGC. The extensive bright chromework and those lovely wires accentuate the smart Masons Black paintwork. The bodywork was restored and repainted some years ago but it is a testament to the long term current keeper’s fastidious care that it remains in such good order.
The story continues inside with the Magnolia leather interior, which was retrimmed at the same time as the rebuild. It is very well presented and neatly detailed including the dash top roll and the black piping to suite with the exterior.
There are few indications of the car’s age and use across the exterior and interior.

If you’re going to build a replacement to the Big Healey, it makes sense to carry over what was particularly great about that car - namely the grunty 3L motor. The MGC’s engine is related but not identical, but you’d hardly know when you press the accelerator. It is the sort of engine of which long distance road trips are made.
This car is pleasingly factory standard after a comprehensive mechanical overhaul that appears to have left no area untouched. The result is a car in very good mechanical health, helped by what we are told is a genuine mileage of under 30,000 miles from new.
The vendor tells us that he has spent £15,000 on parts alone since acquiring the car in 2010. Looking at the photos and hearing his assessment of how this lovely car drives, you can clearly see it was money wisely spent.
