1968 MGC GT

Highlights

  • Subject to a number of mechanical improvements over the past year
  • MOT valid until May 2024 - although exempt from testing
  • Presented in very good, usable condition

The Appeal

With their sights set on the lucrative US market, British sports car manufacturers strove to build coupés and roadsters that would appeal to ‘60s America. After the Austin Healey 4000 project was scrapped on account of the separate chassis construction failing to meet US safety requirements, the monocoque MG B was instead given a larger engine, in the form of a 3.0-litre straight-six. Further influenced by the wants and needs of American buyers, the C was also offered with an automatic gearbox, which we find fitted to this smart UK-supplied example.
Acquired by the vendor in 2022 for their wedding and fulfilling a long term ambition to own a classic car, this delightful MG has since proved a great companion on roadtrips, but it must now find a new home as, with a new arrival expected in the family, the vendor's circumstances have changed.

A great deal of maintenance and improvement work has been carried out over the past year and the car is offered with an MOT valid until May 2024. It’s in very good overall condition, in an attractive colour scheme and not in overly pristine order to use and enjoy as MG originally intended.

The History and Paperwork

  • Acquired by the vendor in July 2022
  • Previously subject to extensive restoration work with invoices detailing various jobs carried out between 1989 and 1990
  • Dry stored during the winter months in present ownership
  • MOT valid until May 2024 - although exempt
  • The vendor informs us that they have covered approximately 1,200 miles in their ownership without issue
  • 93,449 miles displayed on the odometer - although we’re unable to confirm whether this represents the MG’s true mileage

The Interior

  • Appears very original, with no signs of later modifications
  • Gently patinated, but not excessively worn
  • Smart black vinyl upholstery with white piping
  • The seats present well with just some light wear and a little stretching to the material
  • The door cards match the seats and look in nice condition
  • All the carpeting appears in good order and without much wear
  • The headlining in reasonably good condition, with some slight sagging around the edges of the Webasto sunroof
  • The vendor has replaced the radio with the correct blanking plate for a cleaner, period look
  • All the controls, Smiths instruments and Lucas switches look to be of original period specification
  • Presentable boot area with spare wheel and jack present

The Exterior

  • Reportedly finished in British Racing Green
  • Sitting upon chromed ‘knock-off’ wire wheels which present well with just a little light tarnishing to the spokes
  • The bodywork looks to be really sound and straight with even panel gaps [s
  • There are some slight imperfections in the paint finish, but it looks really smart overall
  • No big scratches or any other damage apparent
  • The underside seems in good order although it has been undersealed quite heavily
  • The vendor points out some scratches to the glass, especially on the driver’s side, but this does not impede the view out of the car
  • The Webasto roof is said to operate smoothly and the fabric looks in good order
  • All the trim and brightwork looks in good condition, with some light pitting in places

The Mechanics

  • 3.0-litre straight-six petrol engine
  • Automatic gearbox
  • Recent fitment of a new choke cable and electric fuel pump
  • The vendor reports that the engine starts readily with a little choke and runs well
  • New front brake pads and discs, rear brake shoes and flexi hoses all round
  • The coolant system has reportedly been refurbished as well
  • Recent new battery
  • The exhaust centre section has been renewed and a new silencer has been fitted
  • Presents well under the bonnet
  • Said to shift gears smoothly and brake in a straight line
  • The vendor has covered around 1,200 miles, reportedly without encountering any issues
  • Plenty of performance is available and the vendor remarks that the car “is happy cruising along the motorway or roaring down country lanes”

Summary

This well presented and mechanically sorted MG C is ready to be used, or else would make a brilliant basis for further improvement. With healthy mechanicals, smart bodywork and the reassurance of a long MOT, this is not an opportunity you should allow yourself to miss.
