THE APPEAL
Launched in 1967 as a beefier alternative to the MGB on which it was based, the MGC was built for just two years before being withdrawn in September 1969 with a total of 8,999 cars being built; 4,542 were roadsters and 4,457 were in GT form.
This one is a 1968 GT, which has just been repatriated from South Africa where it has enjoyed a dry climate and is therefore in wonderfully solid condition. It has been repainted and mechanically overhauled, and is presented in fabulous condition.
It has an interesting history, too. The car was delivered new to Bulawayo, in what is now Zimbabwe, and there is a brass plaque on the radiator to confirm this. The car moved to South Africa in the late 1970s and has been carefully used since .
A body restoration was completed in 2015, though the previous owner, the sole agent for Lotus cars South Africa and a personal friend of Colin Chapman, attests that it was completely rust-free and is happy to chat to the car’s new owner about its past.

THE INTERIOR
- Original red leather
- Factory steering wheel
- Gentle patina
Inside, the MGC still wears its original red leather upholstery, which has acquired a gentle patina after 54 years. It’s in good condition, but there’s a small crack in the driver’s side seat back and the leather seat facing is slightly worn, albeit with a lot of charm.
It has the gorgeous original three-spoke steering wheel and all of the dials and switches work as they should. The carpets appear to be original and are in good order, along with the door cards.
THE EXTERIOR
- Glacier White
- Repainted in good order
- 60-spoke wire wheels
- Excellent underneath
Other than a repaint the MGC is largely original and presents very well indeed, with no major marks or damage. It’s also superb underneath, with no signs of every having been welded.
It has chrome-finished 60-spoke wire wheel with knock-off hubs and all of the chrome is present, correct and in very good condition. There are no notable marks or damage to the upper bodywork.
THE MECHANICS
- 2,919cc OHV 6cyl
- Four-speed manual with working overdrive
- Drives well
- Will be fully-serviced and the carbs retuned before sale
The MGC uses the 2,929cc six-cylinder OHV engine, which is a smooth and responsive powerplant with a good turn of speed for its age.
It has a four-speed transmission with a fully functional overdrive. It drove well on a short test and the vendor reports that it will be given a full service before it is delivered to its new owner, with the carbs also being set-up by a time-served classic vehicle specialist to ensure optimal performance.
The brakes, steering and suspension all appear to be in good order.
SUMMARY
If you want a lovely MGC that’s had the benefit of living in a rot-free climate, then here it is – a really nice example of the model, finished in one of the best colour schemes and with terrific bodywork both on top and underneath. It’s a lovely car.
