The Appeal
The Austin Healey 3000 had been enormously successful. But by the late 1960s, the much-loved roadster was nearing the end of its life. As it happened, the Healey was built at MG’s Abingdon Works, so it was MG that sought to build its replacement. MG repurposed its B Series monocoque shell from the MGB and fitted it with a 3.0-litre straight-six and all-synchromesh four-speed gearbox. Overdrive was available as an option, as was an automatic transmission.
Looking to all intents and purposes like its MGB sibling besides a prominent “power bulge” in the bonnet, the 145 bhp MGC was something of a wolf in sheep’s clothing. Those who drove the MGC soon discovered its excellent long-distance touring capability, and it’s still adored by a dedicated group of enthusiasts to this day.
This 1968 example is one of the tidiest we’ve seen. The vendor acquired the car in 2015 following bodywork refurbishment. It’s since been driven very sparingly and kept in the vendor’s garage. There is a history file detailing work carried out during current ownership, including the replacement of the steering, front suspension and front braking system. The MG now has electronic ignition and the vendor notes that the engine and gearbox with overdrive are very quiet with good oil pressure. We’re told, “This car is a joy to drive, especially with the torque of a 3.0-litre engine.”
Exempt from road tax and MOT and ready to enjoy, this beautiful MGC Roadster would be a superb addition to your garage.
