1968 Jaguar E-Type Series 1.5 4.2 Litre Roadster

Highlights

• A lovely 4.2L Roadster with stacks of interesting provenance
 • Very low, MOT verified mileage of under 50,000 miles
 • The subject of previous restorations and many new parts, verified by invoices

The Background

The Jaguar E-Type needs no introduction, achieving almost iconic status right from its 1961 launch. Officially the E-Type was built across three series between 1961 and 1975.
In reality, however, a transitional model, now known as Series 11/2 or 1.5, straddled the Series 1 and Series 2 model runs. The Series 1.5 is the rarest of the model iterations, only being produced between 1967 and 1968 extending to a total production of 2,801 Series 1.5 roadsters for worldwide distribution.
The Series 1.5 cars can most easily be identified by the open headlights of the Series 2, despite the Series 1 body shell and the ribbed cam covers painted predominantly black with the top of the ribs remaining polished aluminium.

The History

This lovely roadster benefits from a full lever arch file of records and provenance. This car was originally supplied by Weybridge Autos to a Cheshire based portable buildings company in August 1968. The car left the factory dressed in Carmine Red paintwork and with a black interior and hood. A certificate of authenticity provided by the Jaguar Daimler Heritage Trust is included in the extensive paperwork file.
In the early 1980’s the car was acquired by the Yorkshire Car Collection. This was a collection of around 400 cars, many of which were used in films and TV series. It is reported that this particular car has previous appeared in episodes of Heartbeat, The Darling Buds of May and Cutting It.
It is believed that the car underwent its colour change to Old English White during its ownership by the Yorkshire Car Collection. In 2007 the car was auctioned by Bonhams at their RAF Hendon sale and the current owner bought the car privately in 2009.
Having always wanted an E-Type since his childhood, the current owner lavished attention on the car and undertook a rolling program of improvements and enhancements to the car. Sadly, the car is now being sold by his family due to his sad passing.

The Paperwork

Our photographic package includes a photograph of the lever arch file which is packed with interesting history, provenance, MOT’s, and invoices relating to this car.

We have photographed just a sample of the paperwork included but some key items include the Certificate of Authenticity, the V5, many bills and invoices and a huge collection of MOT’s.

The Interior

One of the bills included above is the £4,000+ invoice for replacement interior parts for this car dating from 2015. The car has covered very few miles since then, so the interior is in an almost factory-fresh condition.
The seats, carpets, hood, and door cards were all replaced at that stage so present very well indeed with no obvious issues or areas of concern. Many dash elements were also replaced during its current ownership, so the interior is a lovely place to spend time. The only areas we noted that may need minor attention to make this interior perfect is a cracked gear knob and some under dash carpet in need of securing.

The Exterior

As mentioned previously, it is believed the car underwent a colour change during its time with the Yorkshire Car Collection. In order to bring the car up to his fastidious standards the current owner had the car professionally resprayed again during his ownership.
The brightwork and engine bay were also addressed at the same time making the exterior of this E-Type present extremely well. The depth of paint is good, and it gives a lustrous shine even under the dull December skies in which we shot it.
The wire wheels are barely 2,000 miles old so in great condition and the centre spinners have been replaced during its current ownership too.

The Mechanics

Since 2009, or approximately 47,000 miles, a significant amount of mechanical maintenance and updating has been undertaken. This includes replacement brakes, replacement clutch, electronic ignition, new fuel pump, alternator, and battery.
As a consequence, the owner’s family reports that all mechanical systems are in very good working order with no known faults or issues.

The Appeal

It is no surprise that this car was previously a sought-after star of the small screen. For programs set in the late 1960’s or early 1970’s, a white E-Type Roadster is entirely synonymous with that period. Witness the number of celebrities of that period who owned an E-Type – Steve McQueen, Mick Jagger, Peter Sellers and Princess Grace of Monaco to name a few.
The appeal of this particular car lies with its low original mileage, interesting provenance and fastidious recent ownership. This is an E-Type that can be bought, driven and enjoyed as it is. A beautiful car in excellent condition so don’t miss your chance to join that exclusive list of Jaguar E-Type owners.
