The Appeal
Following the enormous success of the MkI Ford-Lotus Cortina on the road and race track, Ford was keen to follow up with an MkII Cortina-based collaboration. Lotus wasn't able to commit the time to the project, however, so it was agreed that Ford would develop and build the car themselves, into which they could fit the Lotus twin-cam and suspension.
Diminishing Lotus' involvement was a big risk, but the gamble paid off. Ford was able to build the cars far more cheaply and simply than the MkI, and the brilliant powertrain ensured the MkII was still plenty quick enough to go racing and remain competitive. The green Lotus stripe was gone from the bodywork, but most Ford main dealers would retrofit them at extra cost.
This 1968 example really looks the part following an older restoration which continues to hold up very well. Recently reawakened following a ten-year hibernation in dry storage, it's said to be driving very well indeed and the vendor has gone through the car in readiness for its next custodian.
