1968 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray

Highlights

  • Exceptionally rare UK car in show-worthy condition
  • Presented in the original colour, Goodwood Green, exceptionally well finished, polished and ceramic coated
  • New Chevrolet 350 crate engine, dripping in performance parts
  • Owned, loved and restored by a true American car enthusiast

The Appeal

An absolute icon of American motoring design and engineering in the automotive world, the Stingray is close to the hearts of many worldwide for their outright flamboyant appearance and exceptional performance. The exquisite example has been in the hands of a true enthusiast for the last decade or more and has seen true care in their ownership, being treated to vast amounts of upgrades both mechanically and cosmetically, ultimately resulting in one of the finest examples in the UK.

The History and Paperwork

  • Huge folder of receipts and paperwork to back up all the work carried out in the last decade along with receipts for performance parts and hand written notes by the late owner
  • Previously painted in ‘Banana yellow’ the car was restored to its assumed original colour by a small amount of paint found and matched while in the body shop
  • V5 documentation stating 12 previous keepers and that the car had been previously imported

The Interior

  •  Exceptionally well presented and maintained throughout, a truly authentic time capsule of American motoring
  • Beautifully re-trimmed seats look as if they were factory fresh and fit in with the interior perfectly
  • Almost no evidence of cracking or deforming due to UV damage to the dashboard or centre console with just one minor crack to the bottom left of the gear shifter
  • The whole cabin of this car is just pure nostalgia and screams American, and we love it! There is nothing really quite like it anywhere else, from the crossed flag emblems that can be found throughout the cabin, the beautifully clear tachymeter and just look at that gear shifter!
  • All the soft furnishings including the seats, carpets, mats and headlining including the ‘T’ top panels are pleasing, beautifully clean and damage free retaining their true colour and texture.
  • The centre console has all the information dials you need to keep a close eye on the health of your V8 motor, an 8 track system for blasting out Bruce Springsteen (naturally!) and your climate controls...nothing more nothing less, just beautifully simple and yet for the time, fabulously futuristic.
  • Absolutely nothing inside this epically spacious two-person cabin has been abused or excessively worn and with only a couple of minor imperfections such as the aforementioned crack in the centre console and a minor crack in the tinted passenger sun visor, all the original features remain in wonderful order.

The Exterior

  • Devilishly handsome and remarkably clean with few minor imperfections all round present us with a superb example a true American muscle car
  • Beautifully repainted in Goodwood Green and just corrected and ceramic coated by a local detailing company
  • Very nice brightwork with some minor corrosion in the less obvious areas
  • Massive side exit exhaust pipes truly set this car off and will only emphasise that massive V8 sound
Sensational colour for this car that really emphasises those massive arches and contrasts against the high polished chrome surfaces, this car is a statement! Some minor corrosion does show through on some of the chrome plated trim pieces such as the wheel caps and under the bumpers and would be rectified with relative ease and cost to bring the car up to a true show condition car.
Side exit exhausts are a true focal point for this car and the chrome, ridged silencer covers are in marvellous condition, unashamedly in your face and lets be honest, really bring out the inner child in us all even if you are not into cars, you know these mean business!
Pop up lamps to the front, just visible in the lower grills when retracted and beautifully contrasting red stop lamps to the rear look fabulous against the green paint and all seem to be in great order with no damage or internal misting/fogging.
So too are the badges and emblems around the car, all very clean, bright and correct for the car, overall difficult to fault all round with just a handful of minor cosmetic blemishes, easily maintained or improved, an outstanding car of the marque and a truly striking machine.

The Mechanics

  • Brand new Chevrolet 350 crate engine adorned in high end performance parts
  • Plethora of new/recent components to ensure a fabulous driving experience
  • Superbly maintained underneath
  • Tasteful use of colours and chrome under the bonnet
If you know your American cars, which likely you do reading this, then you will know that a 5.4 litre engine was fitted from the factory to this stunning machine. In this case, the late owner deemed it necessary when restoring the car to implant a new engine, an uprated 5.5 litre, manufacturer correct unit to replace a spurious engine that had been fitted at some point in the car’s life.
He did not stop there though, and went the extra mile in ensuring the cars performance was enhanced and reliability was improved.
Quality was the name of the game and Edelbrock performer RPM heads held down by ARP head bolts, Edelbrock cams and lifters were fitted along with an Edelbrock cast aluminium inlet manifold to which a Holley Sniper fuel injection kit was bolted to, controlled by a Petronix 3 ignition kit.
Uprated from a 4 speed to a 5 speed T5 manual transmission keep things more up to date and an easier drive and this has been mated to a Sachs clutch kit and modernised propshaft for ultimate reliability.
Other new parts include:
  • Cloyes performer timing chain
  • Water pump
  • Starter motor
  • 140 Amp alternator upgrade
  • Radiator hoses
  • Bilstein front coil springs, front and rear dampers and single leaf rear spring conversion
  • DeWitts aluminium radiator and twin fans with electronic override
  • Global West tubular front control arms
  • New engine mounts
The whole car, mechanically, is exceptional. The underside being particularly solid and clean with just very minor and light surface corrosion to components in places. The evidence of new parts is everywhere, presenting an easy platform to work on and improve on. Some spare parts including a power steering option and new wheel caps are included in the sale.

Summary

This car was designed to be driven and enjoyed but sadly the owner passed away before getting to truly use the car to its full potential. The vendor would dearly like the car to go to someone who would use and enjoy the car just as intended. No doubt, the Stingray is a car that, to many, is a real legend and with the beautiful paintwork, interior and greatly improved drivability will appeal to many and bring a smile to all with those outlandish lines, exhausts and sounds....and more sounds!
