THE APPEAL
Styled by legendary designer Giorgetto Giugiaro when he was only 19 years old as the definition of a young man’s sports coupé, the Alfa Romeo GT Junior became one of the most desirable cars of the late Sixties and early Seventies and is adored by collectors today.
The ‘Tipo 105’ was also a highly successful competition car. At the time, Alfa Romeo was very active in motorsport and Autodelta, the racing division of Alfa, developed a car for competition that closely resembled to the roadgoing model. These cars were named GTA instead of GT, the 'A' standing for "Alleggerita", Italian for lightweight. The GTA was produced first in 1965 as a 1.6 L (1,570 cc) and later as a 1300 Junior version. Today, they’re immensely collectable.
This one isn’t he genuine article, but it’s a wonderful recreation built for the private collection of a South African Alfa enthusiast. The attention to detail is wonderful, and it packs a punch in the engine department, too, with a 200bhp tuned 2.0-litre Alfa Romeo 75 engine in place of the original 1300 Twin Cam.
As recreations and evocations go, it’s something really quite special and is presented in wonderful, restored condition.
THE HISTORY AND PAPERWORK
- Recently imported from South Africa
- Restored over a five-year period by multiple Alfa Romeo specialists
- All import duties and NOVA declarations complete
- MOT, tax and ULEZ exempt
Will require first registration in the UK – a very simple process in which the vendor, a former South African resident, is happy to assist and costs less than £100
THE INTERIOR
- Retrimmed in rich tan leather
- Three-spoke Nardi wood steering wheel
- Alcantara dash
- New carpets throughout
A genuine GTA was a fairly basic car inside, but this one is quite the opposite with the seats reupholstered in rich tan and the new quality carpets fitted throughout. That said, it has a number of GTA features, such as a supplementary rev counter by the gear lever and a very smart Alcantara dashboard. It also features a push-button starter and a new headlining. The interior presentation is excellent.
THE EXTERIOR
- Striking Nuvola Grey
- Fabulously presented in restored condition
- Painted by renowned South African Alfa specialist
- Alfaholics steel rims
There’s a lot to love about the bodywork of this Alfa on top of its sensational styling. It’s presented in great order, with gleaming Nuvola Grey paint, immaculate Alfaholics steel wheels and brand new Michelin tyres all-round. It was repainted by Bassie Theron; Johannesburg’s best-known Alfa Romeo restorer and is in wonderful order, with GTA details including a quick release racing fuel cap and red painted towing eye.
THE MECHANICS
- 2.0-litre engine upgrade
- Tuned Alfa Romeo 75 unit developing around 200bhp
- Stainless steel exhaust system
- Twin Weber carburettors
The previous owner of the Alfa wanted a useful performance increase, so rather than use the original twin cam engine the GTA Evocation is fitted with an Alfa Romeo 75 Twin Spark motor that has had the fuel injection removed and Weber 40 carburettors fitted. The engine is outstanding, and all mechanicals and the motor were built by Gilberto Tores of GT motors in Pretoria – a well-known Alfa specialist.
The vendor estimates a power output of 200bhp, fed to the road via a close-ratio five-speed manual transmission.
SUMMARY
This is an utterly gorgeous car and a wonderful tribute to the high performance GTA models that were such a staple of Alfa Romeo’s 1960s glory days. It’s better than a GTA in many ways and completely looks the part, while the incredible performance on offer is a further bonus.
Some companies sell GTA evocations for almost £200,000, and this one isn’t far off what they produce. It’s a fabulous thing and a surprisingly usable one at that.
