1968-73 Ducati Desmo 350 Racer

Highlights

  • Built up from a number of period performance parts
  • ‘Widecase’ 350cc single cylinder engine with desmodromic valve system
  • Used by the vendor on various parades and track days, finding it to ride very well indeed

The Appeal

Paying homage to the exquisite 350cc Ducati Works bikes of the late ‘60s and early ‘70s, here we have a glorious bespoke built recreation.
This Ducati is built up from a wide range of period-correct competition parts including a dry clutch and lightweight Oldani magnesium front brake with twin-leading shoes. The vendor has used it on track days and various classic bike parades. They report that it runs exceedingly well and rides impeccably, boasting impressive performance that should make it a competitive machine in the right hands.
It’s a truly beautiful machine too, sculpted by engineering necessity rather than a design house. We’d agree with those who argue that this Ducati isn’t just a motorcycle - it’s art.

The History and Paperwork

  • We’re informed that the vendor acquired this bike from renowned classic motorcycle specialist George Beale
  • The vendor first saw the Ducati at a meet in Italy and it was offered for sale in the UK subsequently
  • Built up from period-correct parts
  • Consisting of parts mostly ranging from 1968-73
  • Not registered for road use
  • Has been used in present ownership at various demonstrations and track days

The Condition

  • Utterly stunning from every angle
  • Showcases some incredibly craftsmanship, with beautiful fabrication work
  • Looks every bit the period race bike
  • Impressive attention to small details, with liberal use of safety wire ensuring components remain correctly torqued
  • Impeccably presented, with very few blemishes and hardly any wear
  • A few components display the odd small imperfection, but nothing worth noting
  • We couldn’t seen any dents in the tank or frame
  • All the paintwork appears really smart and there’s no indication of corrosion
  • Slim competition seat upholstered in black vinyl
  • All the decals looks to be in good order
  • There are a couple of additional stickers from events the bike has participated in
  • Separate centre stand to match the frame

The Mechanics

  • Period-correct engine, suspension, gearbox and braking componentry of the highest quality used
  • 350cc ‘widecase’ desmodromic single cylinder engine
  • Competition dry clutch
  • Chain drive
  • Magnesium Oldani front drum brake with twin leading shoes
  • Dellorto PHM 38 carburettor
  • Equipped with an oil catch tank
  • Reportedly runs exactly as it should and rides well
  • The vendor informs us that the level if performance is very impressive, and it should be very fast with a capable rider at the controls

Summary

A racing Ducati has to be one of the most exquisite machines in the world. There’s an unparalleled purity to the design which translates to blistering performance on the racetrack.
Presented in fantastic overall condition and reportedly in fantastic riding order, this is not an opportunity to let slip through your fingers.
