The Appeal

A 'Splitscreen' Type 2 Volkswagen is still the ultimate classic camper and a bonafide style icon at that. Most seem to have undergone extensive customisation - radically lowered suspension and the like - but it's quite refreshing to find one that remains more or less as the factory intended.

This lovely 1967 Type 2 is right-hand drive - quite a rarity. It remains commendably original and while the camper interior boasts a few welcome modern touches it is nonetheless faithful to the style of the period. The interior features freshly coach trimmed seats, a rock n roll bed, and a new kitchen setup making this van the perfect vehicle for family trips away or days out at the seaside.

The van has been kept garaged by both the previous and current owners and reportedly used only during clement weather. Benefitting from a full respray and completed approximately 7 years ago, it continues to present very well indeed, turning heads wherever it goes.

History and Paperwork

  • Reportedly a right-hand drive, German import, registered in the UK on 13th December 2007
  • Recently checked by a reputable local VW/Porsche specialist, deemed a very good example
  • Folder of paperwork detailing respray work, invoices from previous owners, and some service information (approx. an inch thick)
  • No major work required during current ownership
  • Owned for 3 years, benefiting from previous major work including full respray done approximately 7 years ago
  • Previous owner and current owner kept it garaged, used on fine weather days
  • Reluctant sale due to upcoming unavailability of storage

The Condition

  • Paintwork waxed regularly
  • Smart bodywork with few visible imperfections
  • Original steel wheels and chrome hub caps with slight patina
  • Old-style roof rack with minor pitting
  • Very good tyre tread, changed shortly before purchase
  • Interior refurbished less than 5 years ago, in very good condition
  • Freshly coach-trimmed seats and rock-n-roll bed
  • Front cabin floor has rubber mat flooring
  • Lino flooring in the camper cabin
  • Original cream perforated headlining, no drooping, very clean
  • New kitchen with sink, 10L fresh and waste water containers, twin gas hob, and fridge running from a new leisure battery
  • Suggestion for future investment: external pitch hook-up for longer camping trips
  • Comfortable double bed that folds away, leaving storage under seats and a generous boot
  • Kitchen cupboards still smell new
  • Everything inside and out in working order
  • Upgraded all external locks with new Heritage Parts Centre handles and locks, all work with the same key, two sets included
  • Original locks included, slightly temperamental
  • Fresh paintwork done approximately 7 years ago during overhaul work and modern camping modifications
  • Imperfections: 5mm chip on rear engine bay door, 3-4cm hairline crack in paint on boot lid under chrome button
  • Fuel gauge shows 3/4 tank and doesn’t change, needs a new sender or gauge (approx. £50.00)
  • Very original, head-turning condition, style icon
  • Attracts a lot of attention, especially at petrol stations
  • Rare to find a bus that hasn't been customised, lowered, or altered

The Mechanics

  • 1.6-litre air-cooled flat-four
  • Four-speed manual gearbox
  • We're informed that the VW has never let the owner down, starts and drives well on every occasion
  • Rides at factory suspension height, not lowered, presents very originally
  • Very smart engine bay
  • VW Bus specialist checked the engine, only points were changed
  • Cruises well and has proved trouble-free on longer journeys
