1967 Volkswagen Karmann Ghia

Highlights

  • Californian import
  • Desirable 1967 MY 1600 with 'bullet' indicators and thin 'towel rail' bumpers
  • New gearbox fitted
  • Brand new battery

The Appeal

By the mid-'50s, the noble art of coachbuilding was in trouble. Huge advancements in mass-production techniques and a growing demand for affordable cars had put pay to the complex, expensive hand-built cars of the pre-war era.

The Karmann Ghia was therefore something completely new: A coachbuilt car based upon humble underpinnings - a Volkswagen Beetle in an Italian suit.
This 1967 example, (one of the most desirable Ghias), came to Britain from California in 1999. It's been garaged for much of present ownership, but having lost that space, the vendor is reluctantly offering the car for sale.

We're advised that the Karmann Ghia had only been driven only on special occasions, ensuring it remains in good mechanical condition. With a new gearbox and a brand-new battery recently fitted, this car is reportedly in good health. While it does have some areas that would perhaps benefit from cosmetic attention, this commendably original example presents a fantastic opportunity for air-cooled VW enthusiasts.

History and Paperwork

  • Registered in 1967
  • Californian import in 1999
  • Purchased by the current owner in May 2011
  • Has had five registered keepers
  • Car hasn't been MOT'd for a while, as it's been SORN off-road and garaged
  • Had regular MOTs until 2017 (when it was no longer required)
  • Always kept on top of car maintenance and driven on special occasions
  • Garaged for ten years, with regular driving until the last year
  • Selling the vehicle due to recent loss of storage
  • Originally cream

The Condition

  • The bodywork looks straight and is reportedly solid overall
  • The silver paint exhibits age-commensurate patina
  • Wax protected underneath
  • Some evidence of corrosion in the usual areas: sills, boot, jacking points and bonnet - but the vendor believes this is mostly superficial
  • We're advised that the doors need refitting
  • Scratch visible on the nearside of the bonnet
  • Some of the exterior trims are missing, while others exhibit some wear
  • Highly original interior in good overall condition
  • Black vinyl front seats and dash intact
  • Requires mirrors replacing
  • Radio is in working order
  • Fully carpeted, but needs fixing in areas
  • Back seat panel vinyl is peeling back and requires some attention

The Mechanics

  • 1,600 cc air-cooled flat-four
  • Four-speed manual gearbox
  • We're informed that the electrics work well
  • The engine is reportedly in good running order and the car is said to drive well
  • A replacement gearbox has been fitted
  • Brand new battery fitted
