1967 Triumph TR4A IRS Surrey Top

HIGHLIGHTS

  • Well presented
  • Usable British classic
  • Restored in 2016

THE APPEAL

In 1964, Triumph introduced the TR4A, which shared a visual resemblance with the TR4 but featured substantial changes underneath the surface. A notable distinguishing feature was the prominent side lights and indicator units on the front wings, while another clear identifier was the IRS badge located on the boot lid.

This badge signified a significant overhaul of the suspension and chassis, as the conventional trailing rear suspension had been replaced with the Independent Rear Suspension (IRS) system.
This 1967 Triumph TR4A IRS has been with the vendor since 2018. The car was purchased two years after the restoration by the previous keeper, and since then, it has covered approximately 450 miles. The vendor has had some work carried out to free off the brakes, which did include a new caliper and a repair kit for the other caliper. A full service was also carried out just a few hundred miles ago.

THE HISTORY AND PAPERWORK

  • V5 is present and shows four previous keepers
  • Registered 3rd May 1967
  • British Motor Industry Heritage Trust Certificate present
  • Extensive history file
  • Photographs included, which were taken during the restoration

THE INTERIOR

  • Retrimmed red leather seats
  • Original features
  • Well presented
Inside, the TR4 is in excellent condition; the seats have been treated to a full retrim in red leather and are in excellent condition. The door cards have been trimmed to match, and there are no scuffs or damage.
The dashboard is in excellent condition with no splits or cracks to the top, and the beautiful wooden fascia is free from any cracks to the lacquered finish. The instruments are all working correctly, and the odometer shows a reading of 69,843 miles. The switchgear appears to be the original and is in good condition with minimal signs of wear.
The carpets have been replaced and are in good condition, as is the headlining of the removable roof. Inside, the boot is clean and tidy, with the spare wheel in place and a hammer for removing the knockoffs.

THE EXTERIOR

  • Finished in New White
  • Bodywork restoration carried out in 2016
  • Sixty-spoke wire wheels
Finished in New White, the TR4 presents very well, having been only repainted seven years ago; the paintwork condition is excellent. The panels align well with equal gaps, and no dings or dents were spotted.
Starting at the front of the car, the chrome work has a bright and tarnish-free finish, and the headlights are free from any damage. The grille is in good order, and the slats are all straight. Moving up, the windscreen has been replaced along with the seal.
Looking down the sides of the TR4, the trim that runs the length of the car is in good order and has a bright finish. The window frames are also in good condition with just a small amount of age-related tarnishing, and there are some very light scratches on the side windows.
Being the Surrey top model, the car has a fixed rear window, which is in good order, and there is some age-related perishing to the rubber seal. The solid removable roof is in excellent condition and fits well.
At the rear, the correct badges are in place and have a bright finish to them, and the light lenses are free from any cracks. All four wire wheels are in excellent condition with a bright finish to the chrome. The tyres are a matching set and have a good amount of tread remaining.

THE MECHANICS

  • 2.1 litre engine
  • Very well-presented engine bay
  • 4-speed gearbox
The 2.1 litre engine runs superbly and starts up without any hesitation and with no untoward noises while running. The engine bay is very well presented, with no leaks spotted above or below the engine and keeping things cool, the engine has been fitted with an electric fan.
Fitted with a four-speed gearbox, the car pulls well through the gears, and the change is smooth. The TR4 sits nice and level, and the IRS suspension setup does a fantastic job on the road with no knocks or bangs coming from either corner of the car.
The brakes have been overhauled whilst in the current ownership with a new calliper fitted, and the car comes to a stop in a straight line.
