The Appeal
The mid-'60s were a golden era for open-topped sports cars. The once dominant British manufacturers were faced with burgeoning competition from overseas, and all were ultimately vying for dominance in the bountiful US export market. Triumph recognised the need to modernise its excellent yet rather old-fashioned TR4, so did away with the practically prehistoric Hotchkiss drive system with a live rear axle and leaf springs. Semi-trailing arm independent rear suspension was introduced, and Triumph was keen to point this out, adding a sizeable 'IRS' badge to the rear of its new TR4A.
This 1964 example has been well cared for and is offered in highly usable condition. The vendor tells us:
"1967 Triumph TR4A (Overdrive) in white with original black upholstery. I have owned this car for approximately 10 years and decided to put this up for sale as I don't have the time to give it the TLC it deserves. The car has been kept in my garage under cover and has been serviced every year. MOT done in March 2024 for transparency, with all documents/ receipts/ log book/ workshop manual and restoration details (including photos).
"This car is perfect for an enthusiast who either wants to drive as is or to invest money in order to restore to a greater standard. I inherited this car from my father who passed away in 2014. over the years, I've spend approximately £5k restoring the most needed areas of the car for it to be mechanically sound. Only cosmetic work is required if you want this car to be of very high standard."
