1967 Rolls-Royce Silver Shadow Fixed Head Coupé by Mulliner Park Ward

Highlights

  • Desirable 2-door FHC version of the Silver Shadow, coachbuilt by Mulliner Park Ward
  • Interesting former life, owned by the Department of Defence in the USA
  • Believed to be largely original, displaying the patina of age and use

The Appeal

You only have to mention the name Rolls-Royce to anyone, and you know it immediately brings to mind elegance, refinement and luxury.
With coachwork by Mulliner Park Ward, this 1967 Silver Shadow is a good example of the John Polwhele Blatchley designed two-door, fixed head coupé.
There is a small amount of damage to the headlight and front wing, but other than that, the Rolls-Royce presents well with just some age related patina. Just 20,291 miles are shown on the odometer.

Although much of its past is a mystery, it appears to have had light use in the military, and is reported to have been used mainly for parades.

The History and Paperwork

  • Imported from the USA
  • V5C present
  • Believed to have been formerly owned by the Department of Defence in the US
  • Registered in the UK 1st August 2020
  • No previous UK keepers
  • MOT expired 8th June 2022
  • Used until a month before the MOT expired, when the headlight and indicator were damaged

The Interior

  • Seemingly original black leather with red piping
  • Walnut dashboard is in good condition with a small amount of cracking to the lacquer
  • Walnut door cappings are also in good condition
  • All the instruments were working when the vehicle was last started.
  • The odometer shows 20,795 miles
  • Switchgear looks to be in good order, with no excessive wear
  • The leather seats and door cards have some age related patina
  • The carpets are in quite good condition; there is a small amount of wear to the driver’s heel pad, and they would benefit from a deep clean
  • There is no radio included, but some wiring is present
  • All of the electrics are untested, as there was no battery for our visit
  • No sagging is present on the headlining
  • The boot has matching carpet to the cabin and is in good order
  • The original tool kit and jack are present

The Exterior

  • Finished in gloss black with red pinstriping
  • The paintwork presents well considering the car’s age
  • There is some cracking to the paint on the bonnet and odd chips, as you would expect
  • Chromework is all in very good condition with minimal tarnishing
  • There is a small ding on the right side of the grille
  • The panel gaps all look to be matching and even
  • Windows are all in good order with no excessive scratches
  • There is some damage to the nearside wing
  • One headlight and one indicator need to be replaced
  • Original hubcaps are present and in excellent condition
  • Matching Pirelli tyres are on each corner, with a good amount of tread on each

The Mechanics

  • 6.23 litre V8 engine
  • Automatic gearbox
  • When last used approximately five months ago, the car is said to have been running as it should
  • The distributor cap and rotor arm were replaced in 2021
  • New HT leads fitted
  • Rocker gaskets replaced
  • We were unable to hear it running due to no battery being present

Summary

Built before the Corniche was launched in 1971, Mulliner Park Ward bodied Silver Shadows such as this example are quite a rare sight.
While a little work is needed to put this example back on the road, it is smart overall and has an intriguing history that the next owner will likely wish to research.
