The Appeal
Produced for just 12 months between December 1966 and January 1968, the 250SL is the rarest of all Mercedes W113 Pagoda variants. It combines the sportier handling of the previous car with a larger, more beefy engine making for a true sports car experience whilst looking glamorous in SL styling.
This particular model presents in gorgeous condition and has just over 100,000 miles on the clock. Owned by the current owner from 2012 bought from his neighbouring doctor, who had owned and cherished the Mercedes from the seventies. Prior to that, the vehicle had another 2 previous owners.
Since 2012, the car has been very rarely used and always stored in a dry garage. It sits in a stunning condition and is a very original car with matching engine and chassis numbers. Both under its first ownership and most recent one, this car has been meticulously looked after with regular maintenance, and plenty of love.

The Interior
- Gorgeous original interior

- Brilliant condition throughout
The W113 Mercedes Pagoda is all about style and elegance and this car certainly encapsulates that. It presents in a gorgeous condition which, according to the owner is fully original. It is certainly clear how much pampering this car has had throughout its life.
In fact, it even still features the original head unit from 1967 which works perfectly. Elsewhere, all the dials reportedly work as the should, as is the case for the blowers.
Black with very few signs of wear adorns much of the interior from the seats to the door cards and trim. On the floor however, one will spot a light brown shade of carpet whilst wood trim decorates much of the centre console and dashboard.
The large-diameter steering wheel features a leather cover fitted by the car’s original owner. The current owner explains that it has never been removed as it is now part of the car’s history and identity. It certainly adds to the interior’s class featuring a touch of brown in a sea of darker shades.
The Exterior
- Stunning Pagoda shape
- Hard top and soft top present
- Beautiful paint colour
Outside and there is surely nothing quite as stunning as a W113 Mercedes with its hardtop fitted. That being said, this car also comes with a soft top that is reportedly in just as good a condition as the rest of the car. In fact, the owner mentions how well the mechanism works.
This gorgeous German drop top is finished in an elegant shade of Silver Grey Metallic from the factory. This pairs nicely with the darker interior colours with the roof off. It does mean the chrome trim dotted around the body blends into the paint work somewhat. That being said, the grille, light surrounds and badges are all in great shape and sparkle nicely.
Chrome also decorates the wheels with very reflective hub caps. These appear to be in great condition with very few scuff marks to spot. Fitted to the wheels are a set of Michelin tyres, all with what looks to be plenty of tread.
Underneath, the car is seemingly very clean with minimal corrosion. One can also spot the relatively newer stainless-steel exhaust fitted by the previous owner.
The Mechanics
- Rarest Pagoda engine: 2.5-litre inline-six, 148hp
- Runs like a clock
- Sporty rasp comes from the stainless steel exhaust
- Vehicle is original matching number example, to which the vendor has evidence to support
- Power Steering
Only during a single year was the W113 produced in 250SL form with the 2.5-litre version of the M129 engine under the bonnet. In fact, this car with 148hp and stiffer handling characteristics was only available to purchase between December 1966 and January 1968. As a result, this model is a very desirable version of the car.
The engine itself runs like a clock according to the owner and the car drives very well. Thanks to regular servicing and maintenance as well as relatively low miles, this 2.5-litre straight six is a reliable model. In fact, MOT certificates show the 105,000 miles on the clock to be accurate.
As aforementioned, this particular model features a full stainless steel exhaust system. The owner describes the engine note with this pipe as a “sporty rasp.”
Summary
The W113 Mercedes SL is a gorgeous model at the best of times. But when it is a car such as this with an excellent maintenance history, a stunning specification and in gorgeous condition, very little will out-class it.
