The Appeal
Enzo Ferrari’s lifelong passion was motor racing. Some say he loved it so much that he cared little for building road cars beyond their role in financing his competition department.
In the mid-’60s, Maranello had its revolutionary new ‘Dino’ V6 ready to enter Formula 2. The trouble was, they’d need to homologate the engine, and while they had their own 246 model in development, there was no chance it could be put into large-scale production anywhere near quickly enough. Enzo therefore turned to auto giant and fellow Italian company Fiat, requesting they develop a simpler car to take the new powertrain.
Thus, Ferrari could go racing and the Fiat Dino was born.
We’re delighted to offer this lovely early Dino Spider from 1967. The vendor acquired the car in Dijon, France in the summer of 2020 and they assure us that it’s matching numbers and colours. The car has reportedly performed well during the past four years and is in very good mechanical order.
Now it’s ready for a new custodian. What a wonderful opportunity this is.
The History and Paperwork
- The vendor points out the original Pininfarina number still stamped in the boot
- We’re informed that this is ten serial numbers away from the introduction of the less desirable wooden dashboard
- Danish title present
- Road registered in Denmark, where the car is also located
- The vendor acquired the car in 2020 from France
- We’re assured that it is matching numbers and colours
The Condition
- The vendor raised the car on a ramp to show us the underside of the car
- All appears straight, solid and in very good overall condition
- Smart red paintwork with few visible imperfections
- No obvious signs of corrosion
- The chromework appears in good order
- Stylish original alloy wheels in smart order
- The doors, bonnet and boot lid seem to fit well
- The black folding soft top looks smart and the vendor demonstrates how it foods away neatly
- The vendor informs us that two steering wheels are available: a black leather Momo and wooden Nardi
Like many of Ferrari’s own cars the Fiat Dino Spider’s bodywork was conceived in Turin by Pininfarina. They did a great job too, devising beautiful curves punctuated by muscular wheel arches that were quite from the more subdued shapes of the concurrent Pininfarina-penned Fiat 124 Spider and Alfa Romeo 105 Spider.
This example looks marvellous in red - its original colour and we adore those oh-so ‘60s Cromodora alloy wheels. The bodywork looks to be in very good order and the vendor tells us that the underside is similarly well-preserved. The black interior is similarly good-looking and the vendor points out that this is one of the last Dino Spiders built with the desirable aluminium dashboard fascia. There doesn’t appear to be much in the way of wear to the upholstery and controls and we understand all to be in good working order inside the cabin. The folding roof looks well and operates as it should.
The Mechanics
- 2.0-litre Ferrari Dino V6
- Five-speed manual gearbox
- Rear-wheel drive
- Live leaf-sprung rear axle
- New OEM IMASAF exhaust system fitted
- Original-looking and well-presented engine compartment
Let’s not forget that the Fiat Dino owes its existence to what lies beneath the bonnet. Ferrari’s 2.0-litre V6 was a technological tour de force, reputedly designed in-part by Enzo’s late sone - nicknamed ‘Dino’. With dual overhead camshafts, it produced a healthy 158 horsepower in road trim and this would propel the Spider to a very respectable 130 mph top speed.
The vendor informs us that a new IMASAF exhaust system has been fitted during their ownership and the car is said to have performed well throughout their four-year tenure. All presents smartly inside the engine bay and we’re informed that the V6 runs sweetly.
