THE APPEAL
As French icons go, the DS is up there with the Citroën 2CV, albeit at the furthest extreme of Citroën ownership. The space-age saloon was aerodynamic, futuristic and wonderful to drive, remaining so even today.
Unsurprisingly, it’s also a massive hot with collectors as a result and a good DS is a hugely desirable car. This one is a top-spec model – a Pallas – from the latter end of DS production, which means a stronger engine and a more upmarket interior than on early cars. It is being offered direct from a private Citroën collection to raise funds towards other projects.
THE HISTORY AND PAPERWORK
• French ‘Carte Grise’ registration papers
• Recent Controle Technique
• Good history, bought from owner's cousin who had it since 1969 and used it until 1978
• Recent invoices
The owner of this car says it is a very reluctant sale, carried out with a heavy heart as he needs the funds from its sale to go towards the restoration of other cars in his Citroën collection.
It has been in his family for many years and is a cherished example with quite a lot of history, along with invoices documenting the work carried out on the car – essentially a full restoration. It also has its original handbook.
THE INTERIOR
• Excellent order
• Immaculate tan leather
The DS is fantastic inside, its spectacularly weird dashboard and column-mounted gear shift dominating the interior appearance.
The seats, carpets, roof lining and door trims are in terrific order, and all the dials and controls are described as fully working. It also has a rare Continental Edison radio.
THE EXTERIOR
• Lovely restoration
• Finished in original colour
• Underside restored and painted
• Rare and very expensive Robergel hubcaps
• Rare and very expensive Robergel hubcaps
Finished in its original shade of Palladium Grey, the DS is in one of the best colours for the model and looks absolutely terrific on its original wheel trims.
The chrome and exterior are excellent and there are no dents or notable marks to the body, while the underside has been fully restored and is as smart and well-presented as it is on top. A remarkably presented and beautiful car.
THE MECHANICS
• 91,000km from new
• Suspension overhaul
• Recent complete engine rebuild
- Mechanical gearbox (ie non-hydraulic)
The DS’s engine has been completely rebuilt by the vendor: new valves, new timing chain and tensioners and pretty much every ancillary component renewed. As this is a 1967 model-year it already features the green LHM as opposed to the red LHS.
Unsurprisingly, it runs beautifully. The hydraulic suspension has also had new spheres and a complete overhaul.
The vendor describes it as exceptional to drive, with no known faults.
SUMMARY
If you’re in the market for a DS that needs nothing, then here’s an example that entirely fits that bill – it’s a lovely restored example in immaculate overall condition, being sold by a Citroën collector who has cherished it from new and made it as perfect as he can.
There won’t be many better examples on the market, while the upmarket Pallas specification makes this one even more appealing.
