The Appeal
Introduced in 1963, the Chevrolet Chevelle was one of Chevvy’s most successful products. These cars were beautifully styled, mid-sized cars that became almost ubiquitous on the American network, with tight handling and impressive motors ensuring a respectable track record, too.
The creme de la creme, of course, was the Super Sports - or simply, SS - which boasted their ever-enduring block V8 powerplants and upgraded transmissions to get the most out of the motor. Aggressively styled, beautifully finished and full of grunt, it’s little wonder that the public clamoured for them.
This example was subject to a highly impressive restomod, with the original 283cu in 4.6L V8 being swapped out for the legendary ZZ502 V8 powerplant - offering double the horsepower and ensuring that this is a very capable speed demon.
The History and Paperwork
- Built in 1967 as a ‘True 138-code’ SS, rather than a later upgrade
- Based in the US for much of its life
- At some point in its time stateside, the car was subject to an intensive resto-mod
- This included:
- A full frame-off restoration
- Conversion to the ZZ502 Crate V8
- Muncie 4-speed transmission
- 12-bolt Positraction rearend
- 3” flowmaster exhaust
- The vendor purchased the car in Kissimmee, Florida, in 2014
- The car was driven ‘for a couple of years’ in the US before arriving in Germany
- Throughout its ownership, the car has been garaged
- Currently indicates 04,086 miles on a five-figure odometer
- Sadly we can’t discern the car’s authentic mileage
- We’ve not been informed of any paperwork provided with the car
The Interior
- Exceptional black vinyl interior
- Excellent upholstery with no rips or tears
- Stylish period dash with plenty of chrome
- Original radio with modern unit sympathetically installed under the dash
- Additional Auto gage dials displaying oil pressure, volts and water temperature
Stepping into this interior is quite an experience. Conjuring the best of 1960s muscle, the black vinyl and heavy lashings of chrome come together to create a highly evocative place for both driver and passenger.
Everything here is in remarkable fettle, with the seats looking well kept, the door cards free of rips and the carpets resplendent. It’s all clean, nicely presented and has clearly been very carefully handled, with the chromework and furniture still casting a bright contrast.
The dashboard is in good order, with the original wheel and shifter in good order, and every instrument well-presented. A modern JVC sound unit has been installed alongside the Auto gage array, while the original unit is still sitting in situ.
The boot, meanwhile, is in good condition with clean carpets and solid floors.
The Exterior
- Stylish black paintwork
- Plenty of brightly-presented chrome
- Original Chevrolet wheels and branding
- Highly presented with no visible corrosion on the underside
Impressive sleek black paintwork adorns this SS in style, picking out the subtle curves and thoughtful styling that made the car such an icon. Emblazoned with attractive chromework and branding, which is still nice and bright, the entire thing boasts rock-star looks with jaw-dropping performance.
The car’s bodywork is good and tight, with no substantial dents or dings. The vendor notes a small scratch, but it’s of no detraction to the car’s overall condition. There are no signs of major chips or losses, and the car appears practically free of corrosion underneath.
The car is sat on its branded black and silver wheelset, which are shod in turn with redline radial tyres, which really complete the look. It’s a simply remarkable example through and through.
The Mechanics
- 500hp ZZ502 Chevrolet ‘Crate’ V8 powerplant
- 4-speed Muncie transmission
- 12-bolt positraction to the rear
- Front disc brakes
- Power steering
- 3” Flowmaster stainless steel exhaust
- Regularly serviced
It’s fair to say that the ZZ Crate is an incredible piece of machinery, pumping out double the horsepower compared to this Chevvy’s original powerplant, and looking utterly resplendent in its beautifully-kept engine bay.
Lovingly upgraded with an eye for performance, everything about this car is effectively as good as it gets. We’ve no doubt that the performance will thrill the driver, and raise envious glares in their fellow road-users.
The vendor notes that the car starts first time, drives perfectly and suffers no leaks, knocks, bangs or smoke.
Summary
Simply exceptional - and upgraded to the 9s - this is a showstopping example of a highly desirable American classic.
While it’s not one for the purists, we’d argue that the joy of muscle cars is loading them with as much grunt as will fit in them. What could be a better example of that ethos than this remarkable motor?
