1967 Austin Healey 3000 Mark III Phase 2 Cabriolet (BJ8)

Highlights

  • Beautifully appointed ‘Big Healey’ in an attractive royal blue
  • Older restoration carried out some twenty years ago
  • Recent bodywork at the cost of over 12,000 euros
  • Valid Controle Technique until March 2028

The Appeal

Introduced in 1964, the Mark III convertible was the ultimate edition of the Austin-Healey 3000. It’s fair to say it was quite a swan song. With more power available than its classmates, and top-notch handling, they were an instant winner for the track and rally circuit, and provide to be a very real example of a British Bulldog - firm-handling, well-built, sturdy and tough.
To this day, they’re a highly-prized, highly-regarded beast of British motoring - and are still more than capable of providing a few thrills thanks to that sonorous six-cylinder engine and its abundance of torque.
This example, subject to an older restoration, comes to us in a stylish Royal Blue colour scheme with plenty of recent work under its belt, and a valid Controle Technique all the way up until 2028.

The History and Paperwork

  • Built in 1967 & believed to have always been based in France
  • Reportedly underwent a comprehensive restoration around twenty years ago
  • The vendor informs us that this was done ‘close’ to the original
  • Earlier this year the bodywork has undergone some substantial work (12,000 euros)
  • The vendor informs us that the car has invoices history from 1997 until today
  • Odometer currently shows 58,355km on a five-figure odometer (matching records from 1997)

The Interior

  • Impressive period interior with walnut dashboard and Ambla seats
  • Leather has been cleaned and fed for greater suppleness
  • Some light signs of wear, but no rips or tears
  • The walnut dashboard is in good order with a lovely grain
  • Car is complete with a Lecarra wood-trimmed steering wheel
  • Wood-trimmed gearstick knob
  • Exceptional dials and gauges in good order
  • We’ve been informed that all instruments are in good working order
  • Some patina to the chromework, but still presents well
  • Carpets are in fair order with some wear, particularly in the footwells
Exceptionally presented, with plenty of period features, this attractive cabin is loaded with attractive woodgrain and Ambla leather. Everything has been kept in excellent order, with only some gentle signs of wear - which are remarkably light compared to the car’s venerable years.
From what we’ve been informed, it’s all in fine fettle, with no major faults or technical issues to report, and only some gentle scuffs, marks or patina marking the car’s age.

The Exterior

  • Exceptional bodywork with plenty of chrome
  • Stylish deep blue paintwork with a vinyl soft top
  • Paintwork is in good order, with some light wear in places
  • We can spot some marks and stone chips under the headlights
  • Panel fit is tight with no dents or dings
  • All of the door sills, the wings and rocker panels have been replaced
  • The aluminium finish on the doors has already been replaced
  • All chromework has been kept clean and well-maintained
  • The glasswork and lenses are free of chips and cracks
  • The car is sat on its original branded wire spoke wheels
  • Shod in a full set of Toyo tyres which have plenty of tread
  • Some spots of corrosion under the bonnet lid
  • Underneath, the car is in very good order with only light wear
  • The soft top has a very small tear -> A NEW SOFT TOP IS PROVIDED WITH THE CAR (BRAND NEW ITEM IN ITS PACKAGING)
  • The tonneau cover is in good condition
There’s few British sports cars more attractive than the BJ8. This car’s curvy proportions, hood vent and characterful grille is bound to turn heads and raise smiles - it’s simply a remarkable looker.
This particular example, with plenty of fresh, renewed bodywork, comes to us in a stylish colour scheme with all of its chrome still shining bright against the deep blue paintwork. Fitted with a black vinyl soft top, the car’s essential character is perfectly reflected.

The Mechanics

  • Overhauled 2.9L Inline 6 powerplant
  • 4-speed manual transmission, with OVERDRIVE (in good working condition)
  • Fitted with an additional electric fan
  • The engine bay is in good condition with no obvious faults
  • We understand the car to be in excellent working order
  • We’ve received no reports of bangs, leaks, knocks or smoke
The Austin Healey is well known for being a very sprightly operator and this one is very nicely kept, with plenty of recent mechanical work under its belt. Capable of providing plenty of torque when out on the road, it’s little wonder the model has such a reputation.
With plenty of time on its controle technique, no reported mechanical faults, and an additional electric fan installed, we expect it’s an irresistible prospect to an Austin-Healey enthusiast.

Summary

Beautifully presented, in an unusual colour, and boasting plenty of period features to its cabin, this is a superb example of the Healey MK III. There are few cars from the era more charismatic or stylish, and this one has certainly turned our head.
We’ve no doubt that this will become a crown jewel in your classic fleet.
