1966/67 Lamborghini 1R

Highlights

  • Recently restored to a very high standard
  • Rare facelifted ‘square front’ variant
  • Starts, runs and drives very well in all gears

The Appeal

While engineers Gian Paolo Dallara, Paolo Stanzani and Bob Wallace were beavering away on the Miura, the vast amount of money needed to finance such a project had to come from somewhere. As always, Feruchio Lamborghini turned to the one source of revenue he could rely upon - tractors.
Since the Second World War, Lamborghini had made a name for himself manufacturing the farm machinery that was to revolutionise Italian agriculture. The 1R proved a capable and robust tractor, with many still being in service today. This rare ‘square front’ variant has been restored to a high standard by the vendor’s father and is ready to be displayed, driven or put back to work.

The History and Paperwork

  • Acquired by the vendor in late 2021 from a horse breeder from Gorizia, Italy
  • Used mainly to power a hydraulic pump for much of its life
  • Restored by the vendor’s father and a former coachbuilder
  • The tractor has not done any work since the completion of the restoration
  • Not currently road registered
  • 6,495 hours indicated

The Condition

  • Restoration commenced in late 2021
  • Some repairs to the bodywork were carried out
  • The vendor had the tractor sandblasted, straightened and welded where necessary
  • Primed and repainted in the original colour scheme
  • Front headlamps restored to their original condition and the rears were replaced along with the brackets
  • The embossed lettering was painted by hand following the respray
  • New fastenings used where necessary
  • No corrosion or damage anywhere to be seen
  • It has had very little use since the restoration so no wear is evident
  • Original, refurbished steering wheel and dashboard
  • We’re informed that all of the electrics and instrumentation works as it should
  • All badging and identification plates cleaned up and presenting well
  • All tyres replaced ensuring they were the correct original sizes

The Mechanics

  • 1462cc air-cooled, two-cylinder engine producing around 26 horsepower
  • All engine parts resurfaced and reground
  • New gaskets, oil seals and filters
  • Bosch diesel pump reconditioned
  • The vendor informs us that it boasts three fast forward gears, three low range and two reverse
  • All works as it should with the exception of the handbrake
  • Steering system overhauled
  • All new wiring and the battery is new
  • Rebuilt dynamo with new brushes and bearings
  • New reproduction exhaust fitted

Summary

If you’ve always wanted a ‘60s Lamborghini in your garage but can’t quite stretch to a Miura, or if your tractor collection is in need of a centrepiece, then this 1R would be a great addition.
