The Appeal
The word “iconic” gets banded around too much these days, but if there’s one vehicle that warrants such a description, here it is. For fans of the Volkswagen Type 2, the legendary ‘Splitscreen’ is widely regarded as the one to have, ensuring these old vans are still exceedingly sought after.
Many suffer terribly from corrosion, but not this one. Indeed this Type 2 is commendably solid as its disassembled state bears witness to. We’re assured it’s entirely corrosion-free and indeed there appear to be no signs of rust in all the usual trouble spots. The doors all fit very well and both bodywork and underside appear exceedingly straight.
You’ll note that the roof has been modified to elevate with four heavy-duty supports and that one side folds down to provide a serving table. That’s because it was formerly used as a “disco bus” in the Mambo Beach Resort, Curaçao. For those seeking a Type 2 restoration project, be that a camper van conversion or for some commercial application, this would be a superb option.
Seldom does such a well-preserved example come up for sale.
