1966 Volkswagen Type 2 Split Screen Campervan

HIGHLIGHTS

  • Extensive Restoration with no expense spared
  • Two Tone Paintwork in keeping with the era
  • Highly desirable split screen model

THE APPEAL

There probably aren’t many of us who wouldn’t spot a VW camper coming down the road.

Give a child a crayon and ask them to draw a van and this is the shape that would go onto the paper. It’s engrained in our culture, not only here but all over the world.
This camper is known officially as the Volkswagen Type 2 camper or bus in the US. The design was introduced in 1950 as Volkswagen's second car model, derived from their first, the Beetle, that was designated the Type 1.

This fine example dating from 1966 rolled off the production line in Wolfsburg Germany at around the same time as the historic World Cup was taking place.
The factory conversion and subsequent restoration provides practical, spacious, and usable space for a family.

Everything feels of great quality, with a keen eye on the level of detail and finish.

THE HISTORY AND PAPERWORK

  • V5 present
  • Estimated £100,000 of work done in the restoration

This left-hand drive camper was built and supplied in Germany where it spent a lot of its life.
After coming to the UK it underwent an extensive restoration with no expense was spared. All parts were original where possible to keep the vehicle as near to factory as possible.
The vendor estimates the cost of restoration was near to £100,000.

There is no paperwork available to see the level of materials used but we can let the images show you the quality of restoration.

THE INTERIOR

  • Immaculate interior
  • Bright and airy
  • Rock n’ Roll style bed
  • Sink and under seat storage
  • Electric power point with fuses and leisure battery
  • Bright and airy with high quality materials

The cabin to the front is light and airy.

The seats have been recovered in a putty-coloured material with contrasting mystic white piping. The covering flows into the rear seating area where other complimentary colours have been used on the fabrics and floor. All blending beautifully with the pearl white paintwork.
The headliner is in excellent condition.
The rock n’ roll style seating folds down effortlessly in one movement.
We have been informed by the vendor that all the electrics, dial and switches work well.
The Bakelite steering wheel is in fine shape that we can see, as is the gear knob. The dash, speedometer and switchgear are equally clean with little signs of wear. The interior is a fine example of utility and simplicity.

THE EXTERIOR

  • Iconic shape
  • Two tone paintwork
  • Excellent brightwork
  • Factory fitted sliding door access to the side
  • Resprayed to a very high standard in two tone Pearl White over Velvet Green.

As you’d expect from a restoration of this depth, there are none of issues that typically affects the floors and wheel arches of all pre-Transporter VW campers.

There are no signs of repair work to any panels and anything that needed replacing was done in preference to repairs.
Some small areas on the body hinges have a few tiny brown spots coming through the paint but these are very superficial.  Whoever did the work on this conversion really had an eye for detail. The camper holds itself magnificently.

The shut lines are very good, and the period sensitive two-tone paintwork really suits this iconic shape.

THE MECHANICALS

  • A lot of work has been done to the engine
  • 1600cc petrol engine
  • All the gears work well
  • Steering is light and precise

We can only go by the visuals here, but it looks as though the engine has undergone an extensive rebuild and done just 3399 miles since. It starts easily with one turn of the key and runs down the road beautifully.
We have been assured the brakes and clutch work well and there are no noises coming from the axle or gearbox.

The engine bay is clean with easy access to most areas.
