The Appeal

If you’ve ever wondered whether your classic has a mind of its own - and do you really own a classic if you haven’t? - then you’ll understand Disney’s thinking behind ‘Herbie’, the misbehaving Beetle with a heart of gold.

The enduring popularity and timeless style of the original anthropomorphic car explains why so many Beetles have been transformed into loving Herbie replicas. This one stands above the rest because it has also had a starring role as an exhibit at the now defunct London Motor Museum.

Based on a 1966 Beetle 1500, it is fitted with the classic decals and roundels and correct bumpers. It is complete, but it would benefit from some TLC and restoration work. Whether you push this classic Beetle further into Herbie replica territory or return it to standard, this car looks like an interesting and rewarding project.

The Condition

1966 Beetle evolved into a Herbie replica some years ago
Retains Herbie features such as the internal and external stripes
Also has the classic ‘53’ roundels and correct chrome bumpers
Paintwork in off-white with obvious signs of age to note
Bodywork is in similar order with corrosion and damage to some panels
The car is complete and generally presentable but with deterioration visible
Lights in aged condition but complete, as is glasswork
Sits on body colour steel wheels with matching spare and ‘VW’ chrome hub caps
Front and rear bumpers in poor condition with tarnish and some damage
Underside shows some aging and should be checked carefully in photos
Black vinyl interior with matching carpets in aged condition with some tears
Carpets fitted with rubber overmats as shown
Original features retained such as dials and two-spoke plastic wheel
