Highlights
- Owned by one family from new, purchased in 1966 by the vendor’s father-in-law
- Used as Spanish holiday home transport for much of its early life
- Only covered 22,272 miles from new
The Appeal
The byproduct of a 1959 project commissioned by the British Army who were in need of a compact utility vehicle, the Moke was based on Alec Issigonis’ groundbreaking Mini and ended up being manifested as a civilian rather than military vehicle.
Here we have a low mileage 1966 Mini Moke with great provenance.
Purchased brand new by the vendor’s father-in-law, it was since passed on to their husband and latterly to them.
Mokes have long been sought after and are a novel alternative to the VW-based beach buggy.
If you’re after something fun and also a bit different, why not give this charming little Moke a try?

The History and Paperwork
- Purchased new by the vendor’s father-in-law in 1966
- Used at a family holiday home in Spain and then driven back to Yorkshire during the 1980s
- Garage stored in Spain and the UK - driven sparingly
- Offered for sale due to loss of storage space
- Painted purple by the original owner during the ‘70s but otherwise very original
The Interior
- The green vinyl seat cushions show their age but are eminently serviceable
- Pleasing patination to the steering wheel, handbrake, gear selector and pedals
- Very spartan, befitting of its utilitarian origins
- Simple metal dashboard includes working speedometer with inbuilt fuel gauge
- The floor pans are exposed as there is no carpeting or matting
- Spare wheel and original tools included
The Exterior
- Originally green, now partially painted purple
- Largely straight bodywork and seemingly very solid
- Nearside rear indicator lens missing
- Highly patinated - certainly usable as is although the next owner may wish to respray
- Sits upon green steel wheels fitted with hubcaps (straighter spares are supplied in a box with other parts)
- The vendor informs us that new tyres will be required soon
- The windscreen looks to be in good order
- The hood sticks accompany the vehicle, although the hood is no longer serviceable
- Now appears to wear a Ford Mustang emblem
The Mechanics
- 848cc A Series engine (mounted transversely like a conventional Mini)
- Looks to be largely untouched and very original under the bonnet
- Runs well and is still used occasionally by the vendor
- Apparently it always starts without hesitation
- Selects all gears relatively smoothly
- Brakes well and in a straight line
Summary
Seldom will you find a 1966 car that has been in the same family from new.
This Mini Moke has a great story and we think it would make a fantastic project or simply a fun toy to be enjoyed as is.
