The Appeal

The W111 250SE shows a company working at its peak: chiselled Bracq styling, high quality materials and the sort of engineering approach that prioritises solutions over costs.

These cars are revered by enthusiasts.  While firmly fitting the classic mould, thanks to their quality and modern useability, for many owners they are dependable daily drivers.

This is just such a car. Comprehensively restored by marque specialists T & D Heaney in 2003, it has been in daily use by its owner until recently when a house move forced its sale. That refurbishment work has held up very well - helped by regular maintenance - but some preventative work by the buyer would be recommended to keep this great old car going for years to come.

The History and Paperwork

  • The 250SE Coupe is MOT exempt
  • The vehicle has a service history dating back to 2003
  • The car was restored by T and D Heaney, Mercedes restoration specialists, in 2003
  • Valued at 70,000 Euros in 2009 following completion of this work
  • UK supplied RHD car that was then exported to USA
  • Returned to UK in 1994 and acquired by the vendor in 2000 in Ireland
  • Serviced annually by the seller who has used it as a daily driver until recently
  • Becker radio instruction book
The rebuild work in 2003 was undertaken by T & D Heaney, a marque specialist based in Derry.  This work is detailed below.  But be mindful that this car has been used daily by the seller since:
  • New floors
  • Two front wings
  • Two rear wings
  • Rear arches
  • Rear panel
  • Boot floor
  • New side member panels
  • Repainted in solid black using ICI 2k paint
  • Chrome replated or replaced as necessary
  • New tyres and wheel embellishers

The Interior

  • Complete interior re-trim in original quality German leather in 2003
  • New carpets and headliner fitted during the restoration
  • Seats are soft but the leather remains in good condition
  • Wood panels were re-veneered but lacquer has lifted from all the woods
  • Original factory Becker Europa FM radio with electric aerial, both working
  • Centra locking
  • Alarm and immobiliser fitted
  • We are told that all the electrics and dials work correctly

The Exterior

  • Body was restored in 2003 with new panels, however, one side of the underneath now requires repair
  • Chrome work was replated or replaced during restoration
  • Paintwork, while still possessing a good shine, shows signs of wear and tear typical of a vehicle of this age
  • Vendor states that the car looks good from a few feet but shows signs of its use up close
  • There are some areas of poor paint and small marks and chips around the car

The Mechanics

  • Has been kept in excellent mechanical order as the owner’s daily driver
  • Features include a 2.5L 6-cylinder automatic and a 123 Electronic distributor
  • No faults with the operation of the vehicle, with new parts fitted recently

Summary

This 1966 Mercedes 250SE Coupe is a wonderful mixture of classic Mercedes-Benz sophistication and modern-day drivability.

An older restoration that is beginning to lightly deteriorate, it has been usefully used daily and serviced regularly. It appears to be at a useful point for the buyer to acquire a usable, solid car that can be run and improved.
