1966 Land Rover Series II 88”

Highlights

  • A handsome SWB example that was previously restored to a very good standard
  • Benefits from the addition of a canvas tilt
  • Presented in very good overall condition

The Appeal

There’s an allure to classic Land Rovers that’s sometimes quite hard to explain - but here goes…
They’re a vehicle that’s unashamedly fit for purpose, they’re authentic, with nothing you don’t need and not a hint of superfluous styling or indeed any creature comforts. The Land Rover’s form is wholly dictated by function and as a result, they’re arguably rather elegant.
This 1966 Series II exemplifies what makes classic Land Rovers fun. In dainty short wheelbase form and equipped with a canvas tilt, it looks the perfect vehicle for family outings or perhaps a spot of green laning. Previously restored to a very good standard and presented in fine condition both mechanically and cosmetically, this Land Rover is ready to be enjoyed by its next owner.

The History and Paperwork

  • Acquired by the present owner in 2022 from Deane Motors, Dublin
  • The restorer had unfortunately passed away so the paperwork for all the parts purchased and work carried out was lost
  • The vendor informs us that the road tax documentation is present
  • We’re informed that it won a couple of awards at classic car shows in 2022

The Interior

  • Sparse and utilitarian
  • Restored, with little in the way of wear
  • No obvious signs of aftermarket additions
We enjoy how this Land Rover’s interior retains an original look and feel despite having been restored. Besides the seats which are either reupholstered or entirely new, there’s not a soft furnishing in sight and even the dashboard is made of steel.
There’s no radio or indeed any of the trappings of modern cars and that's why we love it. You get a steering wheel, pedals and an assortment of levers, which is actually all you need to make this thing go just about anywhere. We understand that the instrumentation and switchgear works correctly, as does the Smiths round heater.
There’s little in the way of wear and the vendor doesn’t point out any imperfections.

The Exterior

  • Limestone paintwork with matching wheels
  • Equipped with a removable canvas tilt with galvanised frame
  • Smart bodywork
  • The chassis and bulkhead appear in good order
On the outside, all looks to be in great condition and this is a particularly good looking example. Resplendent in the attractive shade of Limestone, this Land Rover looks great and there are few blemishes to be seen.
The vendor points out some slight discolouration to a couple of the chrome headlamp rings and we noted a few small dents in the rear tub along with the odd small paint imperfection. Otherwise, this Series IIA looks to be remarkably straight for a Land Rover of this vintage.
Underneath, the chassis appears in fine order, with just a little light surface corrosion in a few spots. The vendor informs us that it is immensely solid and no work is needed structurally.
The canvas tilt is our favourite feature, allowing you to have a convertible and, if you wish, even fold down the front screen!

The Mechanics

  • Freewheeling front hubs
  • 2.25-litre three main bearing, four-cylinder N/A diesel engine
  • Four-speed manual gearbox with selectable low range and four wheel drive
  • Reportedly runs and drives without issue
The vendor informs us that the Land Rover drives well, with no untoward noises or any faults to report. We understand that the gearbox operates smoothly along with the red and yellow levers that control the low range and four-wheel drive system.
The 2.25-litre diesel engine presents well under the bonnet and we understand that it ticks over nicely. It retains drum brakes all round which we understand operate correctly.

Summary

This looks to be a particularly handsome Series IIA and we’re sure its next owner will have a great many adventures with it. It’s one of the smarter examples around, so don’t miss this excellent opportunity.
