1966 Jaguar MKII 3.4L

Highlights

  • Beautifully presented 1960s saloon with a luxurious feel
  • Only four registered owners from new
  • Exceptional history file
  • Beautiful period interior

The Appeal

Grace, space, pace - that was the advertising slogan for the Jaguar MK2, and how true it proved to be! The MK2 was a beautiful, comfortable car that could keep up with just about anything on the road at the time, thanks to the spirited XK6 powerplant. These are a still one of the most elegant classics of the period, and still a highly capable classic to this day.
This example, carrying the 3.4L XK6, has clearly led quite a charmed life, with an exceptional history file and that sumptuous interior no doubt providing a beguiling prospect for any enthusiast.

The History and Paperwork

  • First registered in 1996
  • First registered owner change in 1993
  • Ownership change in 1999, then in 2000
  • Changed hands again in 2015, and has been with this owner since
  • Underwent plenty of work in 2016, summating to thousands of pounds
  • MOT exempt and last tested in 2017 with zero advisories
  • Currently indicates 69,960 miles on a five-figure odometer
  • As a result we can’t fully verify this as an authentic reflection of mileage
  • However, it does seem supported by period paperwork
  • Paperwork file includes:
    • Original Jaguar MK1, MK2 1955-1969 Autobook by Autopress Ltd.
    • Jaguar Sales and Service Facilities booklet
    • Paperwork for the Jaguar Driver’s Club
    • Selection of invoices from the 1980s
    • Handwritten work log from 1974-1989
    • DotE Vehicle Inspection Check List from 1978
    • Substantial invoice from 1998
    • Plenty of invoices for work done in 2016 to restore the car

The Interior

  • Impressive cream leather interior
  • Evocative, extensive walnut trim throughout
  • Some light wear to the woodwork, though nothing substantial
  • Wood trims around the door cards and windows look in good condition
  • Dashboard in generally sound condition with relatively little wear
  • Original period Smiths gauges and switches
  • All instruments are clean and easy to read
  • We’ve no reports of any technical faults
  • New period-effect music player, which appears to have its protective plastic still applied
  • Completed with a wood-trim Moto-Lita steering wheel
  • Seats are in generally good order with age-commensurate cracking and patina
  • Carpets look to be in excellent order with no major faults
  • Headlining is in very good order
  • Boot looks solid, clean and well presented
  • Floors are free of any substantial wear
  • Spare wheel stowed away in the boot floor
  • Car also boasts its original toolkit

The Exterior

  • Impressive dark red metallic paintwork
  • Exceptional period lines with smoothie curves
  • Lashings of chromework throughout present a luxurious feel
  • Some blistering here and though, but otherwise no severe wear is present
  • Solid looking panel fit throughout
  • Patina across the chromework betrays its age, but doesn’t detract from the car’s appearance
  • The car is wearing period AA, RAC and BP badges, which really add to the period appeal
  • The lenses show some light wear, but no chips or cracks
  • Windows look in good order with faults we can spot
  • The car is sitting on its original wire-spoke wheels, which are in good order
  • Shod in a full set of Kumho tyres, which have only done light mileage
  • Underneath, the car shows light corrosion, but nothing severe
  • Indeed, for a Jaguar of its age, the underneath of the car is excellent

The Mechanics

  • Powered by the XK6 3.4L I6 powerplant
  • Borg-Warner Model 35 automatic transmission
  • Engine bay is in good order with no significant faults we can spot
  • Work done in 2016 amounted to over £7,000 - including:
    • New engine mounts
    • New shock absorbers
    • New fuel tank
    • New radiator
    • Replacement brake pistons
    • Work done to the handbrake including new pins, calipers, forks and places
    • New gaskets, seals, washers etc throughout
  • The car does done less than 300 miles since all of this work was carried out
  • The last MOT was passed with zero advisories
  • The vendor reports that the car is mechanically sound, starting first time with no fuss
  • We’ve no reports of leaks, knocks, bangs or smoke from the car when running

Summary

Perhaps one of the most beloved Jaguar saloons in history, the MK2 is a testament to classy British design. We’re certain that this example will garner plenty of interest.
