The Appeal
There had been sporting saloons before but it took Jaguar to perfect the idea. The Mk2 was both beautiful and, in 3.8litre form, brutally quick, the 200+bhp from its Le Mans-fettled XK engine more than enough to bother high end sports cars.
This 1966 Mk2 began life as a more lowly 2.4 but was professionally upgraded to desirable 3.8 manual overdrive (MOD) around eight years ago. It was restored at the same time and is now also fitted with uprated suspension that delivers handling to match the performance.
The photographs attest to a car that has clearly been lavished with attention. Beautifully presented in Indigo Blue with contrasting red leather interior, it sits on purposeful 205 profile Pirellis with 6in wires. Coombs rear arches complete what is undeniably a purposeful car in superb condition.

- No visible corrosion across car, except for a possible bubble visible in one photograph
- High specification interior with three spoke wood rimmed wheel and smart veneers
- Modern Sony stereo and the wheel the only variation from standard
- Carpets throughout, including boot, in red and finished to high standard and in good order
- Door cards are straight and apparently retrimmed with good veneer cappings
This Mk2 is finished in a particularly compelling colour combination, the blue and red offering a neat contrast to each other that finishes off a beautiful car gently bedecked in chromework. It is, of course, a beautiful shape and one enhanced by the quality of this car’s restoration which is most obvious in the panel fit, particularly to the doors.
The interior continues the theme, the red leather appearing retrimmed to a high standard and complemented by red carpeting, including in the boot. The extensive veneers are in very good order, likewise the door cards which also look like they have been retrimmed.
This is a very well presented car whose aesthetics are neatly finished off by purposeful wider profile tyres and rims and that side exit exhaust.
The Mechanics
- Previously factory fitted with a 2.4litre version of the XK engine
- 3.8litre unit installed around eight years ago with approximately 3,000 miles covered since
- Fitted with the later and desirable all synchromesh 4spd manual gearbox with factory overdrive
- Uprated suspension front and rear and detailed above
- Huge history file documenting thousands spent – if it needed upgraded or refurbished, we are told it was
- Custom built Haywood & Scott side exit exhaust system
- Well kept engine bay reflecting the care and enthusiasm of the owner
This car was uprated to a 3.8litre engine around eight years ago, which is documented in the extensive history file that accompanies the car. This is mated to the later all-synchromesh manual gearbox with factory-fitted overdrive which some enthusiasts of these cars prefer.
But that is not the end of the story for this superb car. To accompany the upgrades the suspension has usefully been extensively uprated with multi-link rear end and adjustable front shocks and springs. The result is a car that handles as well as it goes, something that could not necessarily be said of the standard factory 3.8s. A fruity custom-made side exit exhaust completes the picture.
The owner has taken a no-expense-spared approach to the car’s maintenance, expending over £3,000 since early 2022 in attending to even very minor issues. The car has covered just 3,000 miles since the restoration which means that alongside this recent work it surely comes to the buyer in very good mechanical order.
